The Last Son of Dragontear
Leon Tempest is one of the great heroes of Aurora Arc Academy, a Specter warrior known across Aurelia for his white lightning, extraordinary speed, rune-etched greatsword, mastery of the sky-chaser, and the Phantoms that rise from his Arc as guardians of living storm.
Leon has dark brown hair and piercing emerald-green eyes that turn storm-white when his Specter power fully ignites. Beautiful, tall, and powerfully built, he has broad shoulders and the unmistakable physical presence of a man who has spent most of his life training and fighting. His features carry much of his mother Viviana’s beauty, while his powerful frame and easy confidence increasingly echo his father as he grows older. Leon carries himself with natural charisma, usually accompanied by dry humour, a slight grin, and the calm awareness of someone already thinking about what needs to happen next. His signature weapon is the enormous rune-etched greatsword once carried by his father, Ezio Tempest.
The Boy from Dragontear
Before Aurelia knew Leon as a warrior, he was a joyful boy from Dragontear who loved his family, lightning, dragons, and the open sky.
He trained at Dragontear Academy, practiced his Specter Arc whenever he could, and dreamed of eventually reaching Aurora Arc Academy. He adored his father, Ezio, loved training beside him, and inherited much of his relationship with flying and the sky from the time they spent together. His mother, Viviana, understood one of Leon’s defining qualities long before he did: Leon reached for people. When someone he loved needed him, he moved.
That instinct revealed itself completely during the destruction of Dragontear. Leon stood between Tilly and a Zethra with a wooden practice sword, desperately tried to protect his mother and cousin, and later raised a greatsword almost too heavy for him against a Devastator. His first Phantoms emerged during the battle, great guardians of white lightning answering the child who wanted desperately to keep his family alive.
Dragontear took Tilly, Viviana, and eventually Ezio. Leon survived as the last child of his generation from Dragontear and was carried forward by the people his parents had loved. Antonio, Ryker, and the surviving Old Guard remained around him, while Charlotte gave him a place at Aurora Arc Academy.
Ezio’s words about getting back to the sky stayed with Leon. Flying became one of the strongest ways he carried his father with him, and through the years Leon returned to the same quiet promise whenever he looked up. “Still flying like you taught me, Dad.”
Aurora became the beginning of Leon’s life after Dragontear. He found friends, training, competition, laughter, purpose, and eventually love. Enzo and Solace became two of the boys closest to him, while Lance remained the childhood friend who had known Leon before the fall. By the time Leon left on the mission that would lead into The Girl Who Watches the Sky, the frightened child of Dragontear was already becoming one of Aurora’s most remarkable young warriors.
Cadet Leon - The Girl Who Watches the Sky
As an Aurora Cadet, Leon is already an exceptional fighter. He has grown tall, broad, and striking, carries Ezio’s greatsword across his back, and rides a sky-chaser with extraordinary skill. White Specter lightning gives him enormous speed and striking power, while his Phantoms fight beside him as protective constructs capable of taking on threats far larger than Leon himself. Leon is already capable of killing dragons and fighting powerful Night Reavers, while his speed, greatsword skill, and growing Resonance allow him to survive battles far beyond what most young Cadets would ever face. Against a Devastator, he fights beside Enzo and Solace to create the opening needed to bring the creature down, showing how extraordinary the three young Aurelians have already become.
Leon naturally becomes the person his friends look toward when situations deteriorate. He reads battlefields quickly, makes decisions under pressure, and possesses an instinctive ability to keep people moving when plans collapse. Enzo and Solace understand him almost perfectly. They follow him into danger because they trust him, and they also watch him closely enough to know when the old wounds of Dragontear have surfaced again.
Cadet Leon is still deeply affected by what happened to his family. Zethra attacks, Devastators, and situations where people are trapped beyond his reach can bring Dragontear frighteningly close to the surface. He feels those moments intensely, sometimes crying after the danger has passed or remembering his father in the middle of battle. Yet Leon remains warm, funny, affectionate, confident, and completely capable of enjoying the life Aurora gave him.
His relationship with Willow becomes one of the defining bonds of this period. Leon meets her shortly after the destruction of Windcrest and helps carry her through the aftermath of losing her mother and sister. Their journey across Aurelia gradually becomes something beautiful. They explore cities, fly together, fight beside one another, laugh together, and become extraordinarily close. Willow finds safety in Leon, while Leon loves the quiet, unusual way Willow sees the world.
By the later parts of their journey, the two are completely comfortable with one another. When they are paired for an exhibition match at Emerald Spire, Willow simply walks across the arena and hugs him because she does not want to fight him. Leon hugs her back. The match becomes a game, with two extraordinarily powerful young Aurelians laughing while trying to touch each other’s heads.
The Emerald students also make it very clear that Leon has grown into an exceptionally attractive young man. Their reaction to him is immediate, with several girls openly staring while Willow calmly agrees with their assessment. Leon, naturally, takes the attention with amused confidence.
That mixture of power and warmth defines Cadet Leon. He can charge into a battle against monsters that should terrify him and then spend the evening dancing, joking with his friends, flying through the clouds, or sitting quietly beside someone he loves.
Chosen Captain - The Crimson Sleep
By The Crimson Sleep, Leon has become a Chosen Captain of Aurora Arc Academy and one of the most formidable young warriors in Aurelia. He is tall, heavily built, handsome, immensely fast, and exceptionally skilled with both his greatsword and sky-chaser. His dark Nightweave, silver rune-steel armor, Aurora cloak, and enormous sword give him the unmistakable appearance of one of the Academy’s elite.
His Specter lightning has developed far beyond what he could wield as a Cadet, while his Phantoms have become a defining presence on the battlefield. Leon can now fight threats that once required several young Aurelians working together, using tremendous speed, concentrated lightning, greatsword combat, and increasingly powerful Phantoms to confront enemies such as Devastators directly.
Leon is now responsible for more than himself. He leads people. Younger Aurelians train beneath him. Dante and Kaden become particularly important members of the generation following behind him, while Lance, Lloyd, Hope, Violet, Willow, Vesper, and the wider Aurora family fight alongside him.
The Crimson Sleep becomes the greatest war of Leon’s life. Blood Legion attacks spread across Aurelia, friends fall beneath the curse, and the Vein Weaver pushes the kingdom toward catastrophe. Leon repeatedly finds himself carrying decisions where every available path has a cost.
His Arc continues evolving under that pressure. The Phantoms become more powerful and more numerous, eventually reaching a level capable of changing entire battlefields. Leon’s speed, lightning, greatsword skill, aerial combat, and battlefield awareness combine until his fighting style becomes one of the most devastating in Aurora. He can tear through large enemy formations, survive direct clashes with apex Zethra, and keep fighting while controlling threats across several parts of a battlefield at once.
Yet the heart of Leon remains remarkably similar to the boy who once stood in Dragontear with a wooden sword.
He still reaches.
When Vesper is in danger, he reaches her.
When Willow falls, he reaches her.
When his Cadets need him, he reaches them.
When Lance disappears, Leon refuses to stop searching.
When the kingdom begins falling apart around him, he keeps moving.
The final campaign carries Leon back to Dragontear, where the people he has helped throughout his life begin reaching him in return. Dante, Kaden, Lance, Lloyd, and the others become essential pieces of the battle. The frightened child who once watched Dragontear collapse now returns surrounded by people who love him.
Leon ultimately faces the original Vein Weaver in the skies above Dragontear, bringing everything he has become as a warrior into the battle. Riding his Storm Chaser between the colossal stone arches of his childhood home, Leon fights with white lightning, greatsword crescents, Phantoms, speed, and the flying instincts Ezio taught him years before.
And Leon smiles.
He races through the sky with the same joy he carried as a boy. He laughs in the wind. The Vein Weaver cannot understand how someone who has lost so much can still feel that kind of happiness.
Leon kills him.
Afterward, beneath the sky of the home where his story began, Leon remembers his father.
He is still flying like Ezio taught him.
By the end of The Crimson Sleep, Leon Tempest has become an Ascendant.
Ascendant Leon - The Golden Dawn
By The Golden Dawn, Leon stands among Aurora’s Ascendants, the highest rank awarded by Charlotte. His power has reached a scale capable of influencing battles across cities, destroying enormous enemies, and allowing his Phantoms to appear across vast stretches of the battlefield. Creatures that once demanded prolonged battles can now be killed with a perfectly placed greatsword strike, while his Phantoms are powerful enough to swarm colossal dragons, drag them from the sky, and destroy them across the surrounding city.
He remains an extraordinary Specter fighter, but experience has made his movements calmer and more economical. White lightning, greatsword combat, sky-chaser mastery, hundreds of Phantoms, battlefield awareness, and years of war have turned Leon into one of the great living warriors of Aurelia. He can fight powerful enemies while simultaneously directing his Phantoms across rooftops and streets, protect wounded allies in the middle of a war, and move through aerial battles with the sky-chaser as naturally as he once crossed the skies of Dragontear beside his father.
He has also become a husband and father.
Leon and Vesper are married, and their daughters, Hanna and Haley, grow up surrounded by Aurora, their parents, and the enormous family Leon built throughout his life. Leon is gentle with them, endlessly patient, and completely devoted to the home he and Vesper created together.
This period also shows Leon becoming the experienced hero who appears in the stories of a new generation. When Atlas and Iris are nearly killed during a Blood Legion attack on Wavecrest, Leon saves them and helps bring them to Aurora. He recognizes Atlas’s extraordinary potential and begins guiding him at important moments.
Atlas eventually realizes that Leon’s concern for everyone around him has very little to do with obligation. Leon looks back at his friends and family aboard the Cloud Breaker and gives one of the simplest descriptions of himself:
“I never learned how not to.”
The boy once brought to Aurora after losing his home has become the man bringing others home.
During the great war of The Golden Dawn, Leon fights alongside Aurelia’s Ascendants against threats capable of devastating entire sections of the kingdom. His battles have reached an enormous scale, yet the things that move him remain personal. When he realizes Willow is in danger, he goes for her. When younger heroes need guidance, he gives it. When Charlotte stands beneath the weight of everything she has carried for Aurelia, Leon reaches for her hand and reminds her to look up.
Charlotte eventually looks at Leon and sees both the Ascendant standing before her and the lost child who once arrived at Aurora with no home left to return to.
“You became more than I ever knew how to hope for.”
Leon smiles.
“I had help.”
Hero of Aurelia
Across his life, Leon Tempest survives the destruction of Dragontear, becomes one of Aurora Arc Academy’s greatest prodigies, masters Specter lightning, develops the Phantoms into one of Aurelia’s most extraordinary Resonances, becomes a master of greatsword combat and sky-chaser warfare, and rises from Cadet to Chosen Captain and eventually Ascendant.
He fights Night Reavers, Blood Legion forces, dragons, Devastators, Behemoths, Riftwraiths, Veinbreakers, and some of the greatest threats ever faced by Aurelia. What begins with a gifted young Cadet carrying his father’s sword eventually becomes an Ascendant capable of crossing enormous battlefields in white lightning while hundreds of Phantoms fight throughout the war around him.
He helps carry Willow from Windcrest toward Aurora.
He protects Aurelians during the Crimson Sleep crisis.
He mentors Dante and Kaden.
He helps bring Atlas, Victoria and Iris to Aurora.
He leads his friends and Cadets through the war against the Blood Legion.
He returns to Dragontear and kills the Vein Weaver above the home where his life first shattered.
Through every stage of his life, Leon remains recognizably the same person at his core: affectionate, deeply emotional, confident, protective, fiercely loyal, occasionally reckless, naturally charismatic, and almost incapable of seeing someone in danger without trying to reach them.
His Phantoms become the perfect expression of that instinct. They are great warriors of living white lightning formed from the Arc of a man who has spent his life placing himself between danger and the people he loves.
The Life After the Battles
Eventually, Leon leaves Aurora Arc Academy with Vesper and their daughters and returns home to Dragontear.
There, Leon becomes Captain of the Guard of Dragontear and finally lives the quieter life he and Vesper dreamed about during the years when neither of them knew whether the fighting would ever end.
They build their home beside the sea.
Hanna and Haley grow beneath the open Aurelian sky.
Leon and Vesper grow old together in Dragontear, surrounded by the family and world they spent so much of their lives protecting.
When their extraordinarily long Aurelian lives finally reach their end, Leon and Vesper return to the sky together within hours of one another.
The Tempest bloodline continues.
The frightened boy who once stood beneath a broken sky becomes a husband, a father, a captain, an Ascendant, and one of Aurelia’s great heroes.
And through all of it, Leon Tempest keeps flying.
Just like his dad taught him.
The Girl Who Watches the Sky
Willow is a beautiful Hollow wielder with long black hair threaded through with bright white strands and deep dark eyes. Small and graceful, she carries herself with a quiet stillness that suits the unusual way she experiences the world. Gentle, dreamy, literal, observant, and deeply sincere, Willow understands people and emotions through the wind, clouds, silence, warmth, brightness, and the changing sky. She is naturally affectionate, quietly funny, and deeply compassionate, while her Hollow Arc gives her access to immense destructive power. Over the course of her life, that power develops from extraordinary raw potential into the strength of one of Aurora Arc Academy’s greatest Ascendants.
The Girl from Windcrest
Willow grows up in the mountain settlement of Windcrest with her mother, Maeve, and her sister, Linnet. Even before receiving formal Academy training, her unusual talent is enough to earn an invitation from Aurora Arc Academy. Maeve is delighted by the letter, while Willow worries about leaving her family and wonders whether the wind will become lonely without her. Before she ever gets the chance to leave for Aurora, Night Reavers attack Windcrest.
Willow desperately tries to save her family. Maeve dies at Windcrest with both of her daughters beside her, asking Willow to carry Linnet somewhere safe and reminding them that she will remain with them in the wind and the bells. Willow escapes with her sister, but Linnet is badly wounded during their flight from Windcrest. Willow carries her through the mountains, refusing to leave her as she grows weaker.
The Girl Who Watches the Sky
Willow’s journey truly begins when Leon Tempest finds her protecting the badly wounded Linnet. He promises to help them and carries Linnet on his sky-chaser while Willow travels beside him. For a brief time, Linnet gets to hear Leon, Enzo, and Solace describe Aurora and imagine the life she might have had there with Willow. She dies quietly in Leon’s arms before they can reach a healer. Willow’s grief overwhelms her, and when she falls from the cliff into the water below, Leon dives after her and brings her back. Leon, Enzo, and Solace then continue toward Aurora with Willow, carrying through on the promise they had already made to get her there safely. As the journey continues, Kasumi and others join them, and the small group around Willow gradually becomes something much closer to a family.
The road to Aurora quickly becomes a series of brutal fights and narrow escapes. Night Reavers pursue them, Blood Legion warriors collide with them across the kingdom, and Zethra attacks force the young Aurelians into battles where victory is never guaranteed. Leon, Enzo, Solace, and later Kasumi are repeatedly injured and pushed close to their limits, while Willow begins fighting beside them and learning what her enormous Hollow power can actually do. By the time the group begins crossing Aurelia together, they have already bled for one another, saved one another, and become far more than strangers travelling toward the same destination.
As they travel, Willow begins discovering the beauty of the kingdom beyond everything she has lost. She experiences enormous cities, floating islands, music, food, skyships, dragons, celebrations, and quiet moments beneath the clouds. She laughs again. She dances. She learns to enjoy falling through the sky. She finds people she can hug without wondering whether they will disappear.
That change becomes especially clear after the battle at Scarlet Silk Reverie. Willow and Leon have already watched a wounded Rift begin closing above the city, leading Willow to compare the sky to them both: still hurting, but trying. By morning, the damaged streets are already filling with healers, workers, cooking fires, children, and laughter.
A little girl asks Leon whether Aurora will come again if the sky breaks.
“Every time.”
After the girl runs back to the other children, Willow watches her go. “She believed you. When you said every time.”
Leon looks across the recovering city. “That is the whole point of Aurelia.”
Willow tilts her head. “That someone comes?”
“That someone always tries.”
Willow looks toward the children. “Someone came for them. You came for me.”
She touches the wind-bells at her side and tells Leon that one day she wants someone to hear those bells and know that she is coming. She wants to learn properly so that when someone else is frightened, she will know how to reach them.
Then Willow looks back across everything that has happened since the night she lost Windcrest.
“I thought everything ended at Windcrest.”
Leon’s expression changes, quiet and careful. “I know.”
“But then there was the waterfall. And the dragon. And Linnet’s flowers. And Cloudsong. And Kasumi. And the children. And the sky trying to heal.”
Willow turns to him. “Those things were after the ending.”
She touches the wind-bells again. “You came, and the story kept going.”
Leon’s voice warms. “Then we’ll make sure it keeps going somewhere good.”
Willow stays beside him beneath the wounded morning sky. “Then I am glad it kept going.”
“Yeah?”
Willow looks up at him. “Because it brought me to you.”
The words reach something in Leon as well. He has carried the belief that he arrived too late to Windcrest and too late to save Linnet, but Willow is standing beside him now, looking at him as though his coming had never been too late at all.
Willow studies him. “You look quieter.”
Leon gives her a faint smile. “Quieter?”
“Not empty quiet. Better quiet.”
Leon looks toward the wind-bells at her side. “Maybe you’re good at finding that.”
Willow steps closer. “You found me first.”
“Then we’re even.”
Willow steps into him and hugs him, her arms tightening around his middle while Leon wraps an arm around her shoulders.
“I am glad you found me.”
Leon looks down at her, gentle and steady. “Me too, Willow.”
Leon becomes one of the deepest bonds of Willow’s life. She trusts him completely and loves being around him, while Leon develops an equally deep affection for her. Kasumi becomes another source of warmth and love, Enzo becomes part of the family surrounding her, and Vesper quickly understands the quiet girl Leon has brought into their lives. Willow grows close to all of them.
Her Hollow power develops enormously throughout the journey. Willow begins with tremendous instinctive strength and gradually learns greater control through training and battle. She fights Night Reavers, Blood Legion warriors, Veinbreakers, and threats capable of devastating entire cities. During the battle for the Sapphire Ascendancy, she destroys the colossal Sienna by driving an overloaded Hollow rune dagger into her and consuming the enormous body from within. As the journey continues, Willow becomes increasingly comfortable fighting beside the Aurelians who have become her family.
Near the end of the journey, Willow reaches one of the greatest displays of power of her young life when she destroys a colossal Zethra Behemoth. At the same time, Leon finally defeats Quintessa, bringing an end to the woman responsible for the destruction of Willow’s family.
The victory nearly costs Leon his life.
His sky-chaser is destroyed, leaving him falling through the open sky with no way to stop himself. Believing there is nothing left he can do, Leon looks toward the sky and thinks of Ezio. In what he believes may be his final moments, he tells his father that he kept flying like he taught him.
Then Willow reaches him.
She catches Leon in the open sky, and wraps herself around him. Earlier in their journey, Leon had told Willow to stay where he could reach her, unknowingly echoing the words Ezio once used with his own son.
Now Willow tells him, “I stayed where you could reach me.”
As they descend together, Willow’s Arc finally answers at its deepest level. Her Resonance awakens. The Sirens emerge through the Hollow and sweep across the battlefield, destroying the remaining Zethra beneath the fractured sky.
Leon holds Willow and tells her, “I love you, Willow.”
Tears fill her eyes as she hugs him tighter.
“I love you too. More than the sky.”
The girl Leon once found alone after Windcrest has reached him when he is the one falling.
The group finally brings Willow to Aurora Arc Academy, completing the journey that began with a letter in her mother’s hands. There, Willow’s extraordinary strength is recognized, and she becomes the youngest Ascendant in Aurelian history.
The Academy that Maeve once dreamed Willow might see becomes her home.
Ascendant Willow - The Crimson Sleep
By The Crimson Sleep, Willow is an established Ascendant of Aurora and one of the most beloved members of Aurora family. She remains unmistakably herself. She is still gentle, literal, dreamy, affectionate, fascinated by the sky, and capable of finding beauty in places other people might overlook. Years of training have refined the enormous Hollow power that first erupted at Windcrest into something controlled and devastating.
She fights beside Leon, Vesper, Lance, Hope, Lloyd, Violet, and the others as the Blood Legion spreads the Crimson Sleep across Aurelia. Willow repeatedly places herself between danger and the people she loves, and her battles show how completely the frightened girl from Windcrest has grown into one of Aurora’s great warriors.
During this period, Ruby becomes Willow’s best friend. Willow eventually says it with the same simple certainty she gives to most things that matter to her. When she asks Ruby to return to Aurora with her and Ruby asks why, Willow answers, “Because you’re my best friend.”
Her bonds with Leon, Vesper, Kasumi, Enzo, Violet, and the rest of the people around her continue to deepen as Aurora becomes less a place Willow attends and more simply the place where her life belongs.
Willow is eventually taken by the Crimson Sleep after protecting Ruby and holding off the Blood Legion. She falls beneath the curse covered in crimson roses, leaving the people who love her fighting to bring her home.
When the Crimson Sleep is finally broken and Willow awakens, one of the clearest things she knows is where she wants to be.
Aurora.
Willow goes home.
Ascendant Willow - The Golden Dawn
By The Golden Dawn, Willow has spent years as one of Aurora Arc Academy’s great Ascendants. Her Hollow Arc has reached a scale that allows her to confront some of the most dangerous beings in Aurelia, while the woman wielding that power remains the same Willow who still stops to watch clouds and wonders whether they might become shy.
During the battle for the Aurelian Capital, Willow fights through the city alongside the next generation of Aurora heroes. When she senses a new Vein Weaver approaching, she sends Iris and Cypress to safety and remains behind to face the threat. Their battle tears through towers, rooftops, and streets as two enormously powerful warriors collide across the capital.
Willow is eventually badly wounded and thrown from the city. Leon reaches her while she is falling, destroys the Vein Weaver, and carries her to a healer.
After the battle, Willow finds Charlotte grieving alone. She asks why Charlotte is crying and tells her that she still looks bright, like the sky when it is trying to decide between sun and rain. Willow hugs her and invites Charlotte to a secret place at Aurora where the clouds drift close enough that it feels as though the whole sky is whispering.
Later, Willow lies beside Charlotte beneath those same clouds while younger students gather around them. The supposedly secret place fills with children, families, Knights, Generals, friends, laughter, and people finding somewhere safe to rest after the battle. Willow worries that she has told too many people and that the clouds might leave.
They stay.
Hero of Aurelia
Across her life, Willow becomes one of Aurora Arc Academy’s great Hollow warriors. She survives Windcrest, destroys colossal Veinbreakers, defeats a Behemoth, awakens the Sirens, reaches Leon when he is falling from the sky, battles the Blood Legion through the Crimson Sleep, becomes the youngest Ascendant in Aurelian history, and continues protecting Aurelia through some of the greatest conflicts of her generation.
The people closest to Willow know her just as much through everything surrounding those battles. She loves Leon deeply. She loves Kasumi, Enzo, Vesper, Solace, Violet, Charlotte, and the enormous family she gathers through Aurora. Ruby becomes her best friend. Generations of students come to know the beautiful Hollow Ascendant with white threaded through her dark hair who can destroy monsters and then happily spend an afternoon lying beneath the clouds.
The Life Beneath the Sky
Willow spends her long Aurelian life at Aurora Arc Academy.
It becomes exactly the kind of life that makes her happiest. Generation after generation grows up knowing Willow, from Aurora’s oldest veterans to Cadets arriving beneath its towers for the first time, until she becomes one of the most beloved people in the Academy’s history. Willow delights in all of it. There are always new people to meet, old friends returning home, students to hug, children asking her questions, and someone willing to lie beside her beneath the clouds. The Academy keeps changing around her, filling again and again with new voices and new lives, and Willow never stops finding joy in being part of them.
The wind-bells remain with her.
Maeve remains in the wind.
Linnet remains in the sky.
She arrived at Aurora carrying the bells of a home she had lost. In time, Aurora became the home she would never have to leave.
And through all the years that followed, Willow never stopped watching the sky.
The Light That Crossed the Kingdom
Lance is one of the great heroes of Aurora Arc Academy, a Bastion warrior known for his golden portals, enormous rune-axe, fearless humour, and an almost impossible ability to appear exactly where his friends need him.
Lance is loud, warm, dramatic, affectionate, fearless, and extremely difficult to embarrass. He loves fighting, flying, ridiculous plans, good food, bad ideas, and making the people around him laugh. His humour remains one of his defining qualities throughout his life, but Lance understands people far better than his constant joking initially suggests. When something genuinely matters, the humour can disappear instantly. He knows when someone needs laughter, when they need encouragement, and when they simply need him to stay beside them.
Lance has messy blond hair, bright golden eyes, and a broad, powerful frame suited naturally to the enormous strength of his Bastion Arc. He is an exceptionally attractive man with the kind of princely appearance that people from other Spires openly notice. Golden rune-steel armor, a midnight cloak trimmed in gold, and the massive two-handed rune-axe across his back give him the appearance of a traditional Bastion warrior until his personal Resonance begins opening golden portals around the battlefield.
Those portals become the defining expression of Lance’s power. He can redirect attacks, move himself or others through space, evacuate the wounded, strike from impossible angles, transport groups across enormous distances, and eventually open gateways large enough to carry entire vessels through the sky.
The Boy from Cloudsong
Lance grows up in Cloudsong with his father, Thalen, and his younger sister, Autumn. His home is filled with warmth, food, mountain skies, laughter, and the kind of affection Lance carries with him everywhere else for the rest of his life.
He also knows Leon Tempest long before either of them becomes the warrior Aurelia will later recognize.
Their childhood includes festival bridges, racing through the sky, ridiculous dares, ruined pies, and the kind of memories that survive because the people involved have known one another too long to ever escape them.
That history becomes deeply important after Dragontear.
When Leon arrives at Aurora Arc Academy carrying Ezio’s greatsword and everything he has just lost, Lance comes through a golden portal carrying a stack of blankets, hits the wall sideways, drops almost all of them, and immediately reminds Leon about the time they destroyed Thalen’s favorite pie.
For the first time since reaching Aurora, something almost like life returns to Leon’s face.
Then Lance sees how badly his friend is hurting.
The grin softens.
“I am still very good at hugs.”
Leon steps into him.
Lance hugs him hard, treating him like the same boy he knew before Dragontear rather than something fragile that needs to be handled carefully. When Leon finally clings to him with both hands, Lance stops talking completely.
Then, once Leon is ready, Lance brings the noise back.
He introduces him to Enzo and Solace, declares that they need to rescue Leon from his room, and drags the grieving boy into an extremely questionable plan involving honey drops and Cloud Chasers.
Lance becomes one of the first pieces of Leon’s old life to survive into the new one.
And one of the people who helps make that new life worth living.
Cadet Lance - The Girl Who Watches the Sky
By The Girl Who Watches the Sky, Lance has grown into a powerful young Bastion warrior whose personality remains every bit as chaotic as it was when he first crashed through Leon’s doorway.
His portal Resonance has already become extraordinarily useful in real combat. Lance can catch incoming attacks inside golden openings and return them somewhere completely different, reposition himself in the middle of a strike, remove wounded Aurelians from dangerous battlefields, and create openings that would be impossible through ordinary movement.
When Solace is badly wounded during the later stages of Willow’s journey, a golden portal opens directly before an incoming crimson attack and sends the entire blast back into the enemy who fired it. Lance arrives through the linked opening, sees his wounded friend, and immediately tells him, “I’ve got you.”
Solace answers simply, “I know.”
That trust defines much of Lance’s place among the Aurora boys.
His fighting style becomes especially clear when he spars with Solace. Hollow movement and golden portals begin opening faster than the surrounding students can easily follow. Lance redirects Solace’s limbs, disappears through the mouth of his shadow dragon, emerges above him, shifts both of them across the deck, and continues fighting while the battlefield effectively changes shape around them.
Neither man stops smiling.
The students watching them notice Lance for another reason as well.
“He looks like a prince.”
“He looks even better up close.”
Lance continues preparing to fight as though this is completely normal information to receive.
The combination suits him perfectly. He looks like a golden prince from an old Aurelian story and behaves like the man most likely to fall backward from a railing because he was making fun of Lloyd.
Chosen Lance - The Crimson Sleep
By The Crimson Sleep, Lance has become one of Aurora’s Chosen and one of the central warriors fighting beside Leon as the kingdom enters one of the worst wars of their generation.
His broad frame is covered in heavy golden rune-steel armor, his enormous axe carries concentrated Bastion force, and his portals have become an integral part of the way Aurora fights. Lance can redirect lethal attacks, rescue allies before a blow lands, cross battlefields almost instantly, and use linked gateways to turn his overwhelming physical strength into attacks from angles an enemy cannot easily predict.
He remains Leon’s best friend.
Their friendship carries decades of shared life behind it. Lance remembers the boy Leon was before Dragontear, while Leon knows exactly what sits beneath Lance’s jokes and reckless grin. They insult one another, fight beside one another, laugh after battles that should have killed them, and trust each other without needing to explain it.
One of the clearest demonstrations of that bond comes during a battle with an unusually powerful Devastator.
Leon has already pushed the creature hard when Lance enters the fight through a portal and attacks with his axe. The Devastator turns faster than either of them expects. Its fist shatters Lance’s Veil and crushes the armor across his chest before its claws drive completely through his torso.
The attack nearly kills him.
But in turning toward Lance, the Devastator leaves Leon one perfect opening.
Leon kills it.
Lance’s heart eventually stops from his wounds, leaving Leon desperately trying to restart it with controlled Specter lightning until a Terran healer finally reaches them and brings Lance back.
He survives.
And the wild spark returns to his golden eyes.
The war continues.
So does Lance.
His relationship with Ruby grows throughout this period as well. Ruby loves his warmth, his humour, and the simple joy of being around him, while Lance gradually realizes how deeply she has become woven into his own life.
Then comes Dawnforge Citadel.
Lance has dreamed about seeing Dawnforge’s Grand Sun Arena since childhood. He finally reaches it during one of the most catastrophic battles of The Crimson Sleep.
Inside that arena, Lance, Ruby, Violet, Dustin, and Astra fight Titan, a former champion of the Radiant Tide who has become a Riftwraith. Beyond them, a colossal Behemoth tears through the wounded sky.
When Titan’s failing body begins rupturing with enough unstable Bastion power to kill everyone nearby, Lance understands what is about to happen.
He looks at Ruby.
He looks at the others.
“Some things are worth the cost.”
Lance tackles Titan and drags him through a portal.
They emerge beside the Behemoth’s enormous crystalline head.
Lance drives his rune-axe into Titan as the Riftwraith erupts, turning the explosion into a devastating strike against the Behemoth and cracking open its colossal face.
Lance tries to portal away.
Nothing answers.
For several terrible moments, Lance genuinely believes he is about to die.
The explosion consumes the sky.
His Arc disappears.
Everyone believes Lance is dead.
Leon searches for him until exhaustion finally wins. Ruby mourns him. Aurora believes one of its brightest Chosen has disappeared above Dawnforge.
Lance survives.
At the final possible instant, his Resonance reaches farther than it ever has before and tears open a portal across an impossible distance.
When Lance eventually returns, Ruby finds him first.
She runs to him.
She kisses him.
And the man everyone had already mourned comes home.
Something has changed in Lance’s Resonance after Dawnforge.
His portals can now reach extraordinary distances. During the final campaign, Lance opens gateways large enough to swallow the Wavebreaker itself, then repeatedly carries the entire vessel through linked portals across the sky as the group races toward Dragontear and Leon.
One impossible leap becomes another.
Then another.
The same boy who once opened portals to steal honey drops now carries an entire warship across Aurelia because his best friend needs him.
Chosen Lance - The Golden Dawn
By The Golden Dawn, Lance remains one of Aurora Arc Academy’s Chosen and has become one of the experienced veterans standing beside Leon as another generation begins finding its place at the Academy.
He is still Lance.
He still loves sparring.
He still thinks portals make almost every situation better.
He still considers terrible ideas worth attempting if they sound entertaining enough.
But years of battle have given enormous weight to the moments when Lance becomes serious.
Atlas discovers that quickly.
When the young Bastion worries about not having awakened his Resonance yet, Lance does not give him some grand speech. He places a hand on his shoulder and tells him:
“Till then? Use what you’ve got and make it more than enough.”
That is Lance’s philosophy in one sentence.
When the sky fractures above the capital and a Behemoth emerges, Lance immediately opens the portal that carries Leon, Dante, and himself directly into the kingdom’s defenses.
He later helps evacuate students from the battlefield, using his portals to move people away from the destruction while the larger war continues around them.
Then Lance joins General Vittorio Wavebreaker and Aurelia’s forces against the Behemoth itself.
Thousands of vessels, dragons, and warriors concentrate their attacks against the colossal creature. When fractures finally begin spreading across its face, Lance gathers an enormous amount of Bastion power between his hands.
He fires.
A massive beam of golden radiance tears across the battlefield and crashes directly into the weakened crystal. One side of the Behemoth’s face collapses inward as Lance’s attack drives new fractures through it, creating the opening Leon needs to make his own run toward the creature.
Lance lowers his hands, breathing hard.
“I think it noticed me.”
Even after everything Dawnforge taught him, some things never change.
This period also shows the life waiting beyond those battles.
Lance and Ruby build a beautiful life together and have three sons.
Years after Ruby once believed Lance had died above Dawnforge, she can sit beneath a flowering tree at Aurora and laugh while all three boys chase their father through the gardens.
The eldest nearly catches Lance’s cloak.
A portal opens beneath him.
He appears several steps behind his brothers.
“That is cheating!”
Lance looks back while continuing to run.
“It is only cheating when someone else does it.”
The youngest tries to tackle him.
Another portal safely deposits the boy beside Ruby.
All three eventually attack together.
Lance portals the entire group behind himself and turns around with his arms spread.
“Was that supposed to be an ambush?”
Ruby watches their sons get back up and try again.
Lance remains surrounded by exactly the kind of life Aurelia spent all those years fighting to preserve.
Hero of Aurelia
Across his life, Lance becomes one of Aurora Arc Academy’s great Bastion warriors, a Chosen whose personal Resonance transforms portals from a clever battlefield ability into one of the most extraordinary movement powers of his generation.
He fights Night Reavers, Blood Legion forces, Zethra, Devastators, Riftwraiths, Behemoths, and threats capable of destroying entire cities.
He redirects attacks through space.
He carries wounded friends away from battle.
He fights with a massive rune-axe and enough Bastion force to fracture colossal enemies.
He survives being impaled by a Devastator.
He drags an exploding Riftwraith through a portal to save his friends.
He helps crack open a Behemoth above Dawnforge.
He survives the explosion everyone thought had killed him.
He returns to Ruby.
He carries the Wavebreaker across impossible distances to reach Leon.
He evacuates students during the war of The Golden Dawn.
He pours enough Bastion power into another Behemoth to collapse part of its crystalline face.
And through every stage of that life, Lance remains recognizably the same man.
Warm.
Ridiculous.
Brave.
Affectionate.
Loyal beyond measure.
Lance can walk into catastrophe with an axe over his shoulder and a grin on his face, then become completely serious the moment someone he loves is hurt.
His portals eventually become the perfect expression of the person he has always been.
Wherever his people are, Lance finds a way to reach them.
And when they need to get home, he opens the way.
General of the Radiant Tide
Lance’s life eventually carries him beyond Aurora Arc Academy and into the same great military tradition he once fought beside under General Vittorio Wavebreaker.
In the years that follow, Lance becomes General of the Radiant Tide.
The scale of his Resonance makes him uniquely suited to command a force built around fleets, formations, rapid response, and the defense of an enormous kingdom. The portals that once carried a handful of young Aurelians through Academy fights can now reposition warriors, rescue entire groups from collapsing battlefields, transport vessels across impossible distances, and place the Radiant Tide exactly where Aurelia needs it.
Lance leads the Radiant Tide for many years.
His three sons eventually serve beneath him.
Together they continue answering the great threats that rise across the kingdom, fighting beneath the Radiant Tide’s banners while new generations of Aurelians take their places beneath the fractured sky.
The boy from Cloudsong becomes a father, a Chosen, and eventually one of Aurelia’s great generals.
The humour never disappears.
Neither does the grin.
The Life at Dawnforge
Eventually, Lance steps away from command.
He retires to Dawnforge Citadel.
Of all the places in Aurelia he could have chosen, Dawnforge carries a history that belongs uniquely to him.
It is the city Lance dreamed about visiting as a boy.
It is where he finally stood inside the Grand Sun Arena.
It is where he fought Titan.
It is where he looked at the people he loved and decided that some things were worth the cost.
It is where he opened a portal beside a Behemoth, vanished inside an explosion, and left everyone who loved him staring into an empty sky believing he was gone.
Years later, after Aurora, Ruby, three sons, countless battles, the Radiant Tide, and a lifetime spent opening paths for everyone else, Lance returns to Dawnforge by choice.
The great wars continue without him.
His sons have grown.
The Radiant Tide keeps flying.
And the city where everyone once thought Lance had died becomes the place where he finally gets to stay.
For once, Lance does not need a portal home.
He is already there.
The Fire That Found the Sea
Enzo is one of the great Blaze warriors of Aurora Arc Academy, known for his immense fire-dragon constructs, explosive close-range fighting, easy confidence, and the warmth he carries into almost every part of his life.
Enzo has black hair, vivid red eyes, and the strong, athletic build of a man who has spent most of his life fighting. He is handsome in an effortless, slightly unruly way, particularly when battle has knocked his hair loose and left his armor looking considerably less respectable than it did at the beginning. As he grows older, he becomes broader through the shoulders, wears heavy red-and-black rune armor over his Nightweave, and carries a massive sword across his back.
His personality is every bit as warm as his Arc. Enzo is cocky, funny, passionate, affectionate, flirtatious, and fiercely loyal. He enjoys being alive. He likes people, food, beautiful women, dangerous ideas, travelling, fighting, and giving Leon a difficult time whenever the opportunity presents itself. His humour comes easily, but when someone he loves is hurt, the playfulness can disappear in an instant.
Enzo’s Blaze gives him enormous offensive power. He fights through explosive bursts of fire, burning physical strikes, aerial movement, concentrated attacks, and colossal dragons shaped entirely from living flame. Those dragons become one of his most recognizable abilities, carrying him through the sky, tearing through enemy formations, and allowing Enzo to turn an aerial battlefield into something that belongs almost entirely to him.
The Boy Aurora Chose
Enzo grows up surrounded by a large Aurelian family with a long connection to Ignis Spire. His family trained there, and everyone naturally expected Enzo to follow the same path.
Then Aurora invited him.
Enzo went.
It becomes one of those small choices that quietly determines an enormous part of his life.
At Aurora, Enzo finds Leon and Solace. The three boys grow together through training, flying, terrible ideas, food, competition, and the increasingly dangerous missions Charlotte trusts them to survive. Leon becomes Enzo’s brother in everything but blood, while Solace becomes another constant presence beside them.
Enzo understands Leon particularly well. He knows when to follow his judgment, when to challenge him, when to make him laugh, and when the old wounds beneath Leon’s confidence have surfaced again. The boys rarely need long discussions in battle. Leon sees something, Enzo understands, Solace moves, and the three of them act.
Enzo also brings something valuable into that friendship simply by being Enzo.
His life is full.
He has people waiting for him.
He knows how to laugh without needing permission from the world first.
And he carries that warmth with him into Aurora.
Cadet Enzo - The Veinbreaker Trials
One of the defining turns in Enzo’s life begins at Moonlit Spire.
Aurora is supposed to send several of its Cadets for a joint sparring rotation. Kasumi, already one of Moonlit’s finest young Flow wielders, has heard quite enough about the famous Aurora boys to be curious about whether their reputation is deserved.
The sparring never happens.
The Blood Legion attacks first.
By the time Enzo reaches Moonlit, its pale towers and silver bridges have become a battlefield. He drops through a wall of flame onto a shattered balcony, black hair fallen across his forehead, red eyes burning through the heat, and immediately throws himself into the fighting. A colossal fire dragon rises above the Spire at his command while Enzo meets the soldiers who survive it with burning fists and close-range violence.
Then he sees Kasumi.
She is already in the sky on Reva, fighting the Veinbreaker Mina between Moonlit’s towers.
Enzo asks the only question that matters.
“Kasumi?”
She looks across at him. “Who wants to know?”
“Enzo.”
“Good timing.”
“Happy to help.”
Fire falls into place beside water almost immediately.
Enzo’s dragon drives Mina through bridges and forces her into Kasumi’s firing lanes. Kasumi answers with frost, compressed water, and ice arrows. When one attack misses, the other is already waiting. When Mina regenerates, they simply attack again.
They fight like people who have known one another considerably longer than they actually have.
When the Blood Legion fleet begins bombarding Moonlit, that new connection is tested almost immediately. Enzo stays beside Kasumi through the barrage. When their dragons are struck and both of them are thrown into open air, Enzo catches her around the waist and pulls her against him. He turns his own body toward the incoming fire as the next blast breaks against his Veil.
A crimson portal opens beneath them.
Enzo holds on.
They fall through together.
The two young Aurelians are taken into the Crimson Reach and forced through the Veinbreaker Trials, surrounded by Bloodglass, Crimson, and a system built to wear down the people trapped inside it. They survive it together.
Whatever had begun between a Blaze boy and a Flow girl in the skies above Moonlit leaves the Trials considerably harder to dismiss.
Cadet Enzo - The Girl Who Watches the Sky
By The Girl Who Watches the Sky, Enzo has become one of the central young warriors surrounding Willow during her journey toward Aurora.
He remains one of Leon and Solace’s closest companions, travelling beside them as the mission expands from bringing one grieving girl home into a long journey through Night Reavers, Blood Legion attacks, Zethra incursions, enormous battles, and repeated situations that come frighteningly close to killing all of them.
Enzo’s fire becomes increasingly formidable throughout that journey. His dragon constructs can dominate the air above a battlefield, strike enemies far larger than himself, carry him between towers, and combine with his own close-range Blaze attacks. When the boys face Soren, Enzo is ultimately the one who kills him. Later, Enzo fights beside Leon and Solace against a Devastator, the three Aurora Cadets surviving through the kind of coordination that has become almost instinctive between them.
Leon controls the creature’s attention.
Enzo and Solace concentrate everything they have into the same critical point.
Leon takes the opening they create.
The Devastator falls.
For Enzo, however, the most important part of this period is Kasumi.
Their relationship becomes increasingly obvious to everyone around them. They flirt shamelessly, tease one another, argue, laugh, fight side by side, and reach for each other with the casual physical affection of two people who are rapidly becoming inseparable.
Kasumi understands Enzo’s confidence and gives it straight back to him. Enzo adores that about her.
When she is injured, the change in him is immediate.
During the fighting at Scarlet Silk Reverie, Kasumi is wounded so badly that for several terrible moments Enzo genuinely believes he may lose her. His usual humour disappears completely. He holds her hand, cries over her, and begs her, “Please, don’t go somewhere I cannot follow.”
Then he finally says what fear has made impossible to leave unsaid.
“I love you.”
Kasumi eventually finds him again through the pain.
“I love you too.”
Enzo kisses her gently while the battle continues around them.
Kasumi stays.
Enzo stays with her.
And when she begins recovering, their ordinary rhythm slowly returns with her.
Kasumi informs him that he is buying her a proper dress.
Enzo agrees immediately.
That is their love story in miniature.
Fire, water, near-death, tears, flirting, and a dress they now apparently need to go shopping for.
Chosen Enzo - The Years Beyond the Journey
Enzo eventually earns the rank of Chosen at Aurora Arc Academy.
Kasumi reaches the same rank through Moonlit Spire.
By then, they have long since become a pair both in life and in battle.
They continue taking missions across Aurelia, fighting beside one another through Zethra incursions, Blood Legion attacks, dangerous expeditions, and whatever else the broken sky decides to throw at them. Their styles become extraordinarily complementary. Enzo brings overwhelming heat, pressure, aerial force, and the huge presence of his dragons. Kasumi brings precision, Flow control, ice, water, movement, and the ability to turn the openings Enzo creates into something lethal.
They also become increasingly interested in the enormous world beyond their respective Academies.
Enzo has never been particularly suited to staying behind one set of walls forever.
After reaching Chosen and spending years fighting through Aurora’s missions, he eventually steps away from formal Academy life. Kasumi goes with him.
For a time, Enzo becomes a monster hunter.
He hunts dragons through places such as the deep Verdant Abyss, follows threats into regions few people willingly enter, builds his own Arc Atlas from the routes he survives, and becomes extremely good at finding creatures that do not particularly want to be found.
Kasumi remains the person beside him through those wandering years.
They fight.
They travel.
They eat.
They flirt.
They find somewhere beautiful, stay until they become curious about the next horizon, and then leave again.
For two people who first truly met while flying beside one another through a war, travelling together feels remarkably natural.
Eventually, one particular port begins pulling them back.
Port Solace.
Captain Enzo - The Crimson Sleep
By The Crimson Sleep, Enzo has become Captain of the Guard of Port Solace, with Kasumi serving as his lieutenant.
He looks every bit the part now: tall and broad through the shoulders, dark hair swept back, amused red eyes, spiked red-and-black armor, and a massive sword carried across his back.
The amusing part is that becoming Captain has done very little to make Enzo behave solemnly when solemnity is unnecessary.
When Leon eventually finds him at Port Solace, Enzo is standing in the middle of a celebration with guards, drinks, music, and Kasumi.
She creates a lane of ice.
Enzo attempts to slide across it while carrying tankards.
He starts losing.
So he uses Blaze to melt the ice beneath his boots.
Kasumi calls him a cheat.
Enzo agrees.
Years have passed.
They are still Enzo and Kasumi.
His reunion with Leon is just as natural. The jokes return immediately, but the affection underneath them is obvious. Enzo still knows his old friend at a glance, and Leon still trusts him enough to come looking when a dangerous journey requires knowledge only Enzo possesses.
The old monster-hunting years become important when Leon needs to enter the true depths of the Verdant Abyss. Enzo has been there. He survived months hunting dragons inside it and possesses an Arc Atlas capable of guiding Leon farther into the region than ordinary maps can reach.
Then the war reaches Port Solace itself.
Enzo and Kasumi return to what they have always done best.
They fight together.
When the Veinbreaker Hemorrhage threatens their friends, Enzo crashes into him with a fire-covered fist and sends the enormous warrior across the galleon. Kasumi arrives beside him moments later, locks the Veinbreaker in ice, and finishes the attack with a vast Flow construct.
Later, when the fighting spreads beyond the port, Enzo and Kasumi remain among the defenders holding Port Solace while Leon races toward the people who need him elsewhere.
The Cadets who once fought beside each other above Moonlit have become Chosen, officers, and defenders responsible for other lives.
The rhythm between them remains almost unchanged.
Enzo attacks.
Kasumi is already there.
Kasumi creates the opening.
Enzo takes it.
Neither has to ask whether the other is still coming.
Hero of Aurelia
Across his life, Enzo becomes one of Aurora’s great Blaze warriors.
He survives the Veinbreaker Trials.
He fights his way out of the Crimson Reach.
He kills Night Reavers and Blood Legion warriors.
He shapes enormous dragons from living flame.
He helps Leon and Solace bring down a Devastator while still a Cadet.
He reaches Chosen at Aurora.
He spends years crossing Aurelia on missions with Kasumi.
He becomes a formidable monster hunter whose travels carry him into places such as the Verdant Abyss.
He eventually becomes Captain of the Guard of Port Solace and continues defending the kingdom through the war of the Crimson Sleep.
Yet Enzo’s story has always carried a particular warmth through all of that violence.
He begins with a family.
He finds brothers at Aurora.
He falls madly in love with Kasumi.
He enjoys the kingdom he protects.
The battles never make him embarrassed by laughter, affection, romance, food, travel, or the simple pleasure of being alive. Enzo can burn his way through an enemy formation, land beside the people he loves, and be irritating again within minutes.
Aurelia gives him an enormous life.
Enzo has every intention of enjoying it.
The Life at Port Solace
After The Crimson Sleep, Enzo and Kasumi keep travelling.
They cross Aurelia together without needing every journey to become a mission. They see regions they missed while fighting through them the first time. They follow roads simply because they have never seen where they end. Eventually, their travels take them beyond Aurelia itself and across other continents, giving the two former Academy Cadets the chance to discover parts of the world neither of them knew when they first met above Moonlit.
And eventually, after all that movement, they return to Port Solace.
Enzo resumes the life of a Captain.
Kasumi remains beside him as his lieutenant.
Then their family begins growing.
Their first daughter carries Flow.
So does their second.
And their third.
And their fourth.
Before long, Captain Enzo lives in a house filled with four daughters carrying their mother’s sapphire Arc, while Kasumi seems entirely unsurprised by how thoroughly Flow has conquered the family.
Then their son arrives.
Blaze.
Enzo is delighted.
The house at Port Solace becomes exactly the sort of place their younger selves would have loved: loud, affectionate, full of food, arguments, laughter, water, fire, children, visiting Aurelians, discarded armor, and parents who spent enough of their youth fighting to know how precious an ordinary evening can be.
Enzo and Kasumi continue protecting Port Solace for many years.
Eventually the great battles become stories their children have heard too many times.
The sword spends more time resting than being drawn.
The dragons in Enzo’s life are increasingly likely to be summoned because one of the children wants to climb on one.
And the sea keeps moving beyond the windows.
Years earlier, beneath a bleeding sky, Kasumi had looked across the battle toward Enzo and asked him one simple question.
“Still there?”
Enzo had looked straight back at her.
“Right here.”
By the time the sun begins setting over Port Solace, their children filling the home behind them and a lifetime stretching between that first battle and this quiet shore, Enzo has spent his entire life keeping that answer true.
Right here.
The Tide That Came Home
Kasumi is one of Moonlit Spire’s great Flow warriors, known for her piercing sapphire eyes, dark hair, razor-sharp confidence, mastery of water and ice, and the enormous blue dragon Reva who carries her through some of the most dangerous battles of her life.
Beautiful, composed, and naturally confident, Kasumi usually wears her dark hair tied into a high ponytail and fights with a dagger alongside the sapphire power of her Flow Arc. She is playful, observant, affectionate, flirtatious, and extremely difficult to intimidate. Kasumi enjoys teasing the people she loves and has very little patience for unnecessary drama, but beneath the quick humor is someone who feels her relationships enormously deeply.
Her fighting style reflects her personality. Flow gives Kasumi water, frost, ice, movement, redirection, and tremendous control over the shape of a battle. She can fire compressed torrents strong enough to send enemies through stone, coat her fists and dagger in ice, form bows and arrows of frost, create enormous serpents and other shaped attacks from water, freeze moving constructs in an instant, and fight from Reva’s back while changing between ranged and close combat without hesitation. Kasumi specializes particularly heavily in ice, turning the adaptability of Flow into something precise, fast, and lethal.
The Girl by the Sea
Kasumi grows up along Aurelia’s western coast, where the sea becomes one of the constants of her early life.
She loses her mother while she is young and is raised by her father, Emilio, an enormous Blaze wielder whose preferred use of fire away from battle appears to be cooking unreasonable quantities of seafood.
One of the earliest glimpses of Kasumi is almost perfectly ordinary.
She stands overlooking turquoise water while Emilio grills lobster and crab behind her. When he points out that she has been staring at the sea for ten minutes, Kasumi insists she has simply been looking at it.
“For ten minutes?”
“It’s a very big sea.”
That mixture of beauty, family, humor, and enormous horizons remains with Kasumi for the rest of her life.
She eventually trains at Moonlit Spire, an Academy of pale towers, silver bridges, flowing water, dragons, and a culture that suits her remarkably well. Kasumi becomes one of Moonlit’s finest Cadets. She reads with her friends Nessa and Lisette, spends enormous amounts of time with Reva, and develops the kind of confidence that allows her to hear that Aurora is sending some of its famous boys for a joint sparring rotation and become immediately interested in finding out whether their reputation is deserved.
Then the sky begins raining blood.
Cadet Kasumi - The Veinbreaker Trials
The Blood Legion attacks Moonlit before the Aurora sparring rotation can ever begin.
Kasumi goes from sitting beside Reva with a book to fighting across the Spire within minutes.
A Blood Legion warrior lands on her balcony.
Kasumi freezes her inside a colossal serpent of water.
Reva tears through it.
Then Mina arrives.
The Veinbreaker in the red dress is faster, stronger, and capable of regenerating from wounds that should finish almost anyone else. She breaks through Kasumi’s friends, wounds Reva, shatters Kasumi’s Veil, and throws her from Moonlit’s towers.
Reva catches her.
Kasumi climbs back onto the dragon.
And turns around to fight Mina again.
The battle becomes one of the clearest early demonstrations of what Kasumi is capable of. She fights through damaged ribs and a broken Veil, combines dagger work with water and ice, shapes enormous serpents in open air, fires compressed Flow while riding Reva between the towers, and repeatedly adapts as Mina reveals new abilities.
Then fire enters the battle.
Enzo arrives on the back of his dragon.
For half a heartbeat, living fire and blue scales fly level beside one another.
Enzo calls across the sky, “Kasumi?”
Kasumi looks toward him.
Kasumi looks toward Enzo. “Fast.”
Enzo brings his dragon around. “Again.”
Kasumi nods. “Again.”
They hit her together.
When Blood Legion galleons begin bombarding Moonlit, Kasumi and Enzo remain beside one another through the collapsing sky. She looks across the battle and asks him one simple question.
“Still there?”
Enzo meets her eyes.
“Right here.”
Moments later their dragons are struck, Kasumi falls, and Enzo catches her in open air. He pulls her against him, turns his own body toward the incoming barrage, and holds on as a crimson portal swallows them both.
They awaken inside the Crimson Reach.
The Veinbreaker Trials show as much about Kasumi’s character as they do about her strength.
Bloodglass Palace is designed to exhaust Aurelians until accepting Crimson begins to look easier than continuing to resist it. Kasumi watches people who have spent months waiting for rescue gradually stop believing anyone will come. She sees Crimson offered as an escape from injury, fear, and death.
Kasumi refuses it.
She remains remarkably clear-eyed about the manipulation surrounding her. Pain is real. Abandonment is real. Fear is real. Kasumi will acknowledge all of those things without allowing them to turn cruelty into something noble.
And when she encounters someone more frightened and vulnerable than herself, her instinct is equally clear.
Lilly is struggling inside Bloodglass, uncertain where she belongs and frightened of what is happening to her. Kasumi puts an arm around her and settles the matter herself.
“You’re with us.”
Lilly looks between them.
“Okay.”
Kasumi, Enzo, Lloyd, and the other Aurelians survive Bloodglass and the Trials without surrendering themselves to what waits inside it.
Kasumi returns to Moonlit still carrying Flow.
Still carrying Reva.
And now carrying a Blaze boy considerably closer to her heart than either of them probably intended when the day began.
Cadet Kasumi - The Girl Who Watches the Sky
Kasumi enters Willow’s journey at the end of one of the most brutal battles of Leon’s Cadet years.
On the riverbank below Cloudsong, Leon has fought through what amounts to an entire platoon of Night Reavers alone. The river is filled with bodies by the time another group of elite lieutenants descends to finish him. Leon cuts through them too, then hurls his greatsword across the gorge and pins Quintessa to the rocky wall. Badly wounded and nearly exhausted, he still forces himself back to his feet and gathers a concentrated spear of lightning for the killing blow.
Two concealed Night Reavers erupt from the bloody river behind him.
Leon turns and kills both, but the interruption gives Quintessa the opening she needs. She tears Leon’s greatsword from her own chest and throws it through his side, sending him bleeding from the cliff into the river below.
Willow reaches the overlook just in time to see him fall and believes he has died.
Her grief overwhelms her.
Willow attacks Quintessa with enormous Hollow power, but she cannot control it through the tears, and Quintessa eventually brings her down.
Then Kasumi arrives.
She comes out of the night from Moonlit Spire and immediately goes after Quintessa with water, ice, frost crescents, dagger work, and a colossal Flow serpent powerful enough to force the Night Reaver to retreat.
Willow immediately throws herself from the ledge to search for Leon.
Kasumi follows her.
They find him alive.
Kasumi helps bring him home.
From there, she becomes part of the small family travelling with Willow across Aurelia.
Her relationship with Willow develops differently from Leon’s. Kasumi understands the gentleness in Willow almost immediately, but she also understands battle in ways Willow has never needed to. She helps teach her positioning, patience, when to move, and when remaining exactly where someone placed her may keep another warrior alive.
Willow also becomes someone Kasumi loves fiercely.
That becomes clearest as the journey grows darker.
At Scarlet Silk Reverie, Kasumi fights Lilith alone. She discovers that the Veinbreaker is Aurelian and refuses the story Lilith has built around her own suffering. Kasumi fights brilliantly, using water, ice, speed, and dagger work against an opponent whose Crimson regeneration allows her to survive damage that should end the battle.
Eventually Lilith overwhelms her.
She throws Kasumi from the upper balcony.
Kasumi crashes beside Willow terribly wounded, her sapphire eyes almost empty.
Willow sees her.
And something inside Willow breaks.
The quiet girl who has already lost Maeve and Linnet looks at Lilith and says, “You are the same.”
Then the Hollow answers.
For Enzo, Kasumi’s fall is equally devastating.
He kneels beside her while Autumn desperately works to keep her alive. Kasumi barely responds. Enzo holds her hand, cries over her, and finally begs her not to disappear from him.
“Please, don’t go somewhere I cannot follow.”
Then he tells her what he should have said before either of them had to wonder whether there would be another chance.
“I love you.”
Kasumi eventually finds him through the pain.
“I love you too.”
She survives.
And when the fighting is over, Enzo stays exactly where he promised he would be.
Kasumi’s bond with Willow only grows from there.
When the colossal Sienna reveals the true scale of her Crimson power, Kasumi instinctively steps between her and Willow. Later, when Willow discovers that simply destroying Sienna’s body is not enough because the Veinbreaker can rebuild herself almost instantly, Kasumi helps turn Willow’s extraordinary strength into a plan.
A Hollow rune dagger is brought to them.
Kasumi places it into Willow’s hands and explains what they need her to do.
Fill the weapon.
Reach Sienna.
Release everything inside her before the colossal body can rebuild around the damage.
The battle becomes a desperate effort by everyone around Willow to give her that chance.
Then Autumn is nearly killed protecting her.
Willow begins blaming herself for everyone being wounded around her. The battlefield is collapsing, the rune dagger in her hands is approaching its limit, and fear begins turning inward.
Kasumi stays beside her.
She reminds Willow that Autumn chose to keep her alive, that Violet changed herself to protect Autumn, and that all of them are still standing around her.
“Do not turn what they gave you into another reason to be afraid.”
Willow asks her, “What do I turn it into?”
Kasumi looks toward Sienna.
“An ending.”
When Willow finally says she needs a path, Kasumi becomes part of the wall that creates one.
Enzo and Solace move forward.
Violet’s sharks descend.
Kasumi places herself between Willow and everything coming through the smoke.
Then, before Willow launches toward the colossal Veinbreaker, Kasumi raises her ice-coated dagger.
“Make her quiet.”
Willow holds the rune weapon against her chest. “I will.”
Willow destroys Sienna.
The journey continues.
By its later stages, Kasumi has become inseparable from the strange extended family forming around Willow. Enzo is the man she loves, but Leon, Solace, Lance, Willow, Autumn, Violet, and the others have become hers too.
That love carries its own fear.
During one of their rare peaceful moments aboard the Cloud Breaker, Kasumi looks around at the people gathered together and briefly sees the boys who should have been standing among them.
The circle had once been larger.
Kasumi cries.
Nobody asks her to stop.
Enzo pulls her against his chest. The others close around her. Willow wraps herself around Autumn and Violet. Leon, Lance, Solace, and Enzo join them.
Together they speak the Aurelian Creed.
Kasumi delivers its final promise through tears.
“And fight for a world where hope and love can flourish, even in the face of unimaginable sacrifice.”
The circle had once been larger.
So they hold the people still inside it closer.
Chosen Kasumi - The Years Beyond the Journey
Kasumi eventually earns the rank of Chosen through Moonlit Spire.
Enzo reaches Chosen through Aurora.
By then, the relationship that began during a Blood Legion attack has become one of the constants of both their lives.
They continue travelling together through missions across Aurelia, answering Zethra incursions, hunting dangerous creatures, helping settlements under attack, and repeatedly finding themselves in places where someone needs two extremely dangerous Aurelians who work remarkably well together.
Their fighting styles continue developing around one another.
Enzo brings enormous force, heat, aerial pressure, and the huge presence of his fire dragons.
Kasumi brings control.
She can freeze a route closed, alter the shape of the ground beneath an enemy, strike through openings with compressed Flow, control movement through water and ice, and turn the chaos created by Enzo’s fire into opportunities only she can see.
Reva remains beside her through those years as well, carrying Kasumi through skies far beyond the silver bridges where they first trained together.
Eventually, the missions become journeys simply because Kasumi and Enzo want to see what lies beyond the next horizon.
They cross Aurelia together.
They visit places neither Academy ever sent them.
They follow monsters into wildernesses most travelers avoid and find beautiful places they had previously only crossed while fighting.
Kasumi has spent her entire childhood staring at a very big sea.
Now she begins finding out what lies beyond it.
And wherever she goes, Enzo is usually somewhere nearby making the experience louder.
Eventually, one place begins drawing them back more often than the others.
Port Solace.
Lieutenant Kasumi - The Crimson Sleep
By The Crimson Sleep, Kasumi has settled for a time at Port Solace, where Enzo serves as Captain of the Guard and Kasumi serves as his lieutenant.
The titles fit them surprisingly well.
Enzo gets to be Captain.
Kasumi gets to remind him when the Captain is cheating.
When Leon finds them again, Kasumi is standing beside an ice lane she has created across the port while Enzo attempts to slide down it carrying tankards.
He begins losing.
Blaze flares beneath his boots and melts the ice.
Kasumi folds her arms. “That’s cheating.”
Enzo places the tankards down without spilling either one. “Yes, it is.”
Kasumi steps closer and informs him that he would burn out trying to melt her.
Years have passed.
Very little has changed.
When the Blood Legion reaches Port Solace, however, Kasumi becomes the Chosen warrior beneath the joking lieutenant.
Hemorrhage has already survived an extraordinary amount of punishment by the time Kasumi reaches him. Lance has burned deeply through his regeneration. Lloyd tears another massive wound through him with lightning. Enzo crashes into the Veinbreaker with a fire-covered fist and sends him across the deck.
Kasumi arrives beside Enzo.
“It is now.”
She stamps one boot against the deck.
Ice races beneath Hemorrhage and locks around his legs while frozen spikes drive through the damaged armor.
Kasumi extends both hands.
Flow gathers around her and becomes an enormous water beast with ice moving through its translucent jaws.
The construct strikes Hemorrhage through the chest.
Frost consumes him.
Kasumi closes one hand.
The construct shatters.
Hemorrhage shatters with it.
When the larger Blood Legion assault spreads across the Verdant Expanse, Leon races toward Riverbloom to reach Vesper and Willow.
Kasumi stays at Port Solace with Enzo, Lloyd, Lance, Hope, and the guards.
The port is theirs to hold.
So they hold it.
The young Moonlit Cadet who once fought to protect her own Spire has become a Chosen responsible for protecting an entire city beside the man she met during that first battle.
And when the danger passes, Kasumi still knows exactly how to return to laughter.
Hero of Aurelia
Across her life, Kasumi becomes one of Moonlit Spire’s great Flow warriors.
She survives the Blood Legion attack on Moonlit.
She fights Mina through shattered towers with a broken Veil and returns to the battle after being thrown from the sky.
She survives the Veinbreaker Trials and the Crimson Reach.
She forces Quintessa to retreat when Willow is helpless and helps bring Leon home from the river.
She fights Lilith alone at Scarlet Silk Reverie.
She becomes one of Willow’s closest protectors and helps the young Hollow warrior understand how to turn extraordinary raw strength into battlefield discipline.
She stands between Willow and Sienna.
She helps devise the attack that allows Willow to destroy the colossal Veinbreaker.
She reaches Chosen through Moonlit Spire.
She travels Aurelia beside Enzo, fighting monsters and answering threats across the kingdom.
She becomes Lieutenant of the Guard at Port Solace.
And during the Crimson Sleep, she continues defending the people who have become her family and the city that eventually becomes her home.
Through all of it, Kasumi remains unmistakably herself.
She is confident because she knows who she is.
She laughs easily.
She loves deeply.
She cries when grief reaches her.
She flirts with Enzo shamelessly.
She can spend an afternoon reading beside Reva and an evening freezing a battlefield beneath an enemy army.
And when someone she loves begins to lose themselves inside fear, Kasumi has a remarkable ability to look directly at what hurts and help them find the next thing that needs to be done.
Her words during the Aurelian Creed eventually describe the life she has already chosen.
Fight for a world where hope and love can flourish, even in the face of unimaginable sacrifice.
Kasumi does.
The Life at Port Solace
After The Crimson Sleep, Kasumi and Enzo begin travelling again.
This time, there does not always need to be a monster waiting at the destination.
They cross Aurelia together simply because they can.
Then they go farther.
They travel beyond the kingdom and visit other continents, following coastlines, cities, mountains, islands, old roads, unfamiliar skies, and all the places two young warriors once wondered whether they would ever live long enough to see.
Eventually, the sea leads them home.
Port Solace.
Kasumi returns as Enzo’s lieutenant, and together they continue protecting the port for many years.
Then their family begins.
Their first daughter carries Flow.
Kasumi is delighted.
Their second daughter carries Flow too.
Then the third.
Then the fourth.
Before long, Port Solace contains four little girls with sapphire Arc light gathering around their hands, water appearing in places where it absolutely was not requested, and a father increasingly surrounded by the same power their mother has spent her life mastering.
Then their son arrives.
Blaze.
Enzo is extremely pleased.
Kasumi is probably considerably less surprised than he is.
Their home becomes loud, affectionate, crowded, and alive. Four Flow daughters, one Blaze son, visiting friends, discarded boots, half-finished meals, water where water should not be, occasional fire where fire definitely should not be, and two parents who spent enough of their youth nearly dying to appreciate the privilege of watching their children simply grow.
Reva remains part of that life.
So does the sea.
The battles eventually become less frequent.
The children grow.
The port changes around them.
Kasumi and Enzo grow older together beside the same kind of open water Kasumi loved before she had ever seen Moonlit Spire, Bloodglass Palace, Willow, the Crimson Sleep, or the enormous world waiting beyond Aurelia’s shores.
When she was young, Emilio once caught his daughter staring toward the horizon and asked how she could possibly look at the same water for ten minutes.
Kasumi had given him the obvious answer.
“It’s a very big sea.”
She eventually spends a lifetime discovering just how right she was.
And after seeing what waited beyond it, Kasumi comes home.
The Heart of Dragontear
Vesper is one of Aurora Arc Academy’s great Terran healers and warriors, known for her extraordinary reserves of emerald life-force, immense physical strength, battlefield restoration, and the Wisps that eventually allow her healing presence to spread far beyond the reach of her hands.
Exceptionally beautiful, with long brown hair and vivid emerald-green eyes, Vesper carries an effortless elegance whether she is dressed in fitted Nightweave, emerald rune-steel armor, or an evening gown. She is warm, affectionate, intelligent, emotionally perceptive, stubborn, playful with the people she loves, and fiercely protective of anyone placed beneath her care. Vesper has a natural instinct for seeing when someone is hurting, even when they are trying to hide it, and that compassion remains at the center of her life no matter how formidable she becomes.
Her Terran Arc gives Vesper far more than healing. Emerald energy reinforces her body with exceptional strength, endurance, and resilience, allowing her to fight at close range with enough force to break armor, crater stone, and physically overwhelm opponents who expect a healer to remain behind the battle line. At the same time, her restoration develops until she can repair catastrophic injuries with extraordinary precision. Where Terran healing can leave behind the lingering pain of a Wound Echo, Vesper eventually reaches a level where even that echo can be removed.
Her personal Resonance, the Wisps, expands that gift across entire battlefields. Small manifestations of emerald life can move away from Vesper, seek out the wounded, remain with allies while they continue fighting, and carry her healing power across distances no ordinary Terran could reach.
Vesper becomes one of the finest healers in Aurelia.
Through every stage of her life, the purpose beneath that power remains remarkably consistent.
Vesper wants the people she loves to come home.
The Girl Above the Clouds
Vesper grows up in a wealthy Aurelian family surrounded by open sky, books, dragons, beautiful estates, and the sisters she adores. Ivy and Rosie are still young when that life is torn apart by the Blood Legion, while Vesper’s older sister Vanessa is already following a path of her own. Vesper’s mother is killed, the family estate is devastated, and the Blood Princess Verena turns what had once been a place of safety into a battlefield.
Vesper already possesses enormous natural Terran power, but almost none of the experience she will later gain. She fights because Ivy and Rosie are behind her, using her strength and whatever remains around her to keep the Blood Legion from reaching them.
Then she meets Leon Tempest.
The young Specter who enters Vesper’s life is carrying an enormous greatsword and moving directly toward the people who need him. During the attack, a colossal enemy dragon continues tearing through the estate. When someone asks what Leon is doing as he studies it, Leon answers simply, “Aiming.”
He throws his greatsword across the battlefield and drives it through the dragon’s heart.
The surviving Blood Legion warriors believe he has disarmed himself. Leon looks at them. “I needed the steel for the dragon. Not for you.”
Then he goes after them without it.
For Vesper, everything that eventually grows between them begins with something much simpler. Leon helps keep her sisters alive. He stays while Vesper desperately heals Ivy, and when Aurora’s wider mission threatens to pull its warriors onward, Leon promises that he will get Vesper, Ivy, and Rosie safely to Aurora Arc Academy.
He keeps that promise.
The Journey to Aurora
The road to Aurora gives Vesper and Leon time together neither of them expected.
For a while they stay in a small mountain cottage, a place almost absurdly removed from the estate Vesper has lost. Leon cooks while Ivy and Rosie insist on helping him, Vesper begins learning how to fight with greater control, and quiet evenings settle over the mountains. Somewhere inside that strange little pocket of peace, the boy who arrived to protect her family becomes her friend, and then something much more.
Leon becomes the first boy Vesper kisses, and no one else ever takes that place in her life.
Their relationship develops quickly and naturally. Vesper and Leon fall deeply in love while still young, and the greater uncertainty surrounding them is whether either will survive the dangers ahead long enough to discover what that love can become.
Their journey gives them both danger and happiness. Blood Legion assassins come after them, and Leon nearly dies protecting Ivy, giving Vesper an early understanding of the fear that will follow her relationship with him for years: loving a man whose first instinct is always to put himself between danger and somebody else.
There are beautiful stretches too. At Riverbloom, Leon teaches Vesper to use his greatsword while fighting her unarmed, though his instruction occasionally deteriorates into tickling her whenever she leaves herself open until Vesper is laughing too hard to continue. They discover an enormous enchanted bookstore, where Leon makes the catastrophic mistake of telling Vesper she can choose whatever she wants and leaves carrying far more books than he anticipated. At night, Vesper reads while Leon cooks and her sisters provide enthusiastic assistance.
For a while, their lives are allowed to feel wonderfully ordinary.
Flying remains one of Vesper’s greatest joys. She has loved dragons since childhood and becomes an exceptional rider. When she enters a major aerial race during the journey, Leon encourages her to compete, and Vesper wins.
Then a fracture opens and the Zethra come through.
A Devastator kills Vesper’s dragon.
Leon kills the Devastator, but there is nothing he can do about the loss itself. Vesper is devastated, yet wounded Aurelians are still falling across the battlefield and she can feel them everywhere.
Her Arc answers.
Vesper’s Wisps awaken, spreading as emerald lights across the battlefield and carrying her healing to fighters and skiffs far beyond the reach of her hands. She pours so much concentration into keeping everyone alive that she can no longer defend herself properly.
Leon moves directly in front of her.
His Phantoms rise through the white lightning, and Leon looks back at Vesper. “Vesper. Close your eyes.”
He draws his greatsword. “There is nowhere in Aurelia safer than behind me.”
Vesper closes her eyes and gives everything she has to the wounded.
The moment begins revealing what she will eventually become. Vesper possesses enough strength to fight monsters herself, while some of her greatest victories come from making sure the people beside her remain alive long enough to win theirs.
After the battle, the loss of her dragon leaves another wound Terran power cannot simply close. Leon eventually teaches Vesper to ride a sky-chaser, giving her a way to return to the sky she has always loved.
By the final stages of the journey, Vesper is no longer the inexperienced girl Leon first found protecting her sisters. When Verena returns, Vesper faces the Blood Princess herself, fighting from a sky-chaser with Leon’s enormous greatsword in her hands and ultimately killing the woman who helped destroy her home.
Then Leon brings Vesper, Ivy, and Rosie to Aurora Arc Academy.
The promise he made on the day they met is complete.
Vesper reaches Aurora with her sisters safe and the boy she loves beside her.
Vesper at Aurora
Aurora gives Vesper the training capable of matching the power that has always existed inside her. Her Terran reserves become enormous, her close-range fighting develops until her hands can be as dangerous as many warriors’ weapons, her restoration becomes increasingly precise, and the Wisps grow into one of the most valuable healing Resonances among Aurora’s fighters.
Her relationship with Leon grows alongside all of it.
Vesper comes to understand the quieter parts of him almost as well as the obvious ones. She knows when Leon is joking because he is happy and when he is joking because something hurts. She understands what Ezio, Viviana, Tilly, and Dragontear carry inside him, and when old grief rises again, she does not always ask him to explain it.
Sometimes she simply stays.
Leon had once been the person who helped Vesper and her sisters survive the destruction of their old home. In time, Vesper becomes one of the people around whom Leon can finally stop carrying everything for a while.
Their love begins reaching toward a future beyond missions and wars.
One evening beneath the Academy trees, Leon tells Vesper that someday he wants to take her to Dragontear. Vesper tells him she wants to see it with him, then admits that she has already imagined something else waiting there.
Two daughters.
“With you.”
Together they imagine a quiet house beside the water, Dragontear’s cliffs beneath the morning sky, and two little girls filling their home with life.
Leon promises Vesper that one day they will have them.
Then another mission comes.
Vesper asks him to come back.
For years, he does.
Captain Vesper - The Months Apart
As Leon and Vesper grow older, the part of him Vesper loves most fiercely becomes the part she finds hardest to live beside.
When somebody needs help, Leon goes.
Eventually a catastrophic fracture event erupts while major reinforcements, including the Arcstorm and Radiant Tide, have yet to reach the battlefield. Waiting is the sensible military decision. Leon and a group of powerful Chosen decide to go in anyway.
Vesper understands exactly what that decision could cost.
She desperately tries to stop him and finally tells Leon that if he willingly leaves before the reinforcements arrive, their relationship is over.
Leon still goes.
The original force suffers horrific losses. When the proper reinforcements finally enter the battle, Vesper goes with them and finds Leon among the survivors, badly wounded but alive. She heals him, but when Leon tries to repair what has happened between them, Vesper cannot simply erase the choice he made.
They separate.
For roughly three months, Vesper builds a life without him. Leon sends occasional letters without demanding an answer, checking that she is safe and telling her that he still thinks about her. Vesper keeps healing, taking missions, and trying to move through a world in which almost everything seems capable of reminding her of him.
Eventually she stops trying to convince herself that her feelings have changed.
She still loves Leon.
Vesper decides to go back to him herself, only for the timing to fail them again. Leon has just returned from another devastating Rift battle when she finds him, grieving over the body of a young Cadet. Vesper tries to reopen the door between them, but Leon is exhausted and emotionally hollowed out by what has happened.
He looks at her. “You said it was over.”
This time Vesper is the one who walks away heartbroken.
She returns to Aurora, packs her belongings, and accepts a Captain’s position at Emerald Spire. Ruby goes with her, and Violet follows as well.
By the time Leon returns to Aurora having finally decided he needs to find Vesper, her room is empty.
He believes she has moved on.
She has not.
They have simply missed one another again.
Captain Vesper - The Crimson Sleep
At Emerald Spire, Vesper builds a formidable squad and a life that belongs to her. Ruby and Violet fight beside her, and Willow eventually joins them as well.
Willow’s presence carries a small piece of Leon with it.
While the women are together beneath Emerald’s open sky, Willow casually tells Vesper, “Leon said it would be nice if I came with you.”
Vesper looks toward her. “He said you would like the skies here.”
Willow considers the clouds. “He was right.”
Even while Leon and Vesper are apart, he is still thinking about her. He knows Vesper, knows Willow, and quietly places someone he loves beside someone else he loves during a period when he cannot be there himself.
Life at Emerald contains brutal missions, but it also gives Vesper moments of the life she is fighting to preserve.
During one quiet stop, Vesper helps a little village girl who has hurt herself. She heals the scrape and patiently fixes the girl’s ruined braids afterward. The child notices more than Vesper expects, and their conversation eventually reaches Leon. When Vesper admits that she still likes him, the girl sees the situation with the uncomplicated certainty only a child can manage: if Vesper still likes the boy, perhaps she should simply be with him.
Vesper smiles at the simplicity of it.
The thought stays with her.
Then the Blood Legion arrives.
An elite Veinbreaker named Rose, named after the Crimson Queen, attacks Vesper’s group and turns the peaceful valley into a battlefield. Rose is devastatingly fast, capable of regenerating through extraordinary punishment, and powerful enough to push Vesper, Ruby, and Violet into a brutal fight. Vesper heals through her own wounds while protecting the people around her and repeatedly returns to the battle.
Willow eventually reaches them, and as the fighting escalates, Leon senses Vesper’s familiar Terran presence weakening from elsewhere in the wider conflict.
He comes for her.
Months of separation collapse into a single moment when Vesper sees white lightning crossing the sky.
After Rose is defeated, Leon takes Vesper away from the battlefield on his sky-chaser. She heals the wound in his side while they fly, and for a little while they race over the water, dive toward a crystal lake, laugh, and remember how naturally happiness once came to them.
Beside the river, they almost kiss.
Vesper stops.
Too much still exists between them to pretend the separation never happened.
Leon understands and begins to leave.
Then Vesper remembers the little girl whose scraped shoulder she healed and whose braids she fixed.
If you still like him, why not be with him?
Vesper turns around.
She runs back to Leon and jumps into his arms.
They kiss.
It does not settle everything between them, but it answers the most important question.
They still love each other.
Scorchvale forces them to confront the rest.
A massive Rift opens while civilians remain trapped below and the proper support fleets have not yet fully reached them. Leon wants to move immediately.
Vesper stops him.
“This is why we broke up. This is why.”
She wants to save Aurelia too. She also wants both of them alive when the battle is over, and finally asks Leon the question beneath years of fear.
“What do I mean to you?”
Leon answers immediately. “You mean everything to me, Vess.”
“Then why?”
Vesper already knows the answer. There are people below them who may die if they wait.
She tells Leon that she loves him and begs him to wait for Vanessa and the approaching reinforcements. Vesper is a Captain too. She is standing beside him, trying to save the same kingdom, and she cannot bear watching Leon make every impossible decision as though the people who love him exist somewhere behind him.
“I’m not some girl you leave behind, Leon. I’m your girl. Look at me!”
Leon does.
“I see you, Vess. I always see you.”
Willow is caught painfully between them. The danger in the sky pulls at every instinct she possesses, but Vesper is her Captain and one of the people she loves. Violet reminds Willow of that, and Willow looks between Vesper and Leon.
Leon makes the choice easier for her.
“It’s okay, Willow. Stay with your captain.”
Willow admits that she does not like it.
“You don’t have to,” Leon tells her. “Stay with Vesper.”
Willow does.
Leon enters the battle with Lance, Lloyd, and Hope. Vesper remains with Willow, Violet, and the others until the reinforcements arrive.
Then Vesper comes after him.
Together, they turn the battle.
Afterward, Vesper is helping the wounded when she sees Leon with a mother and her two little girls. One of them, Avery, offers him her favorite piece of volcanic crystal as thanks for saving them. Leon crouches to her height, accepts the tiny gift as though she has handed him something precious, promises to keep it, and hugs her.
Vesper watches.
And finally understands the contradiction she has been living with.
“This is why, isn’t it? Why you can never turn away. I was so afraid of that part of you. And somehow, it is still the part I love most.”
The same instinct that terrifies Vesper has left a little girl alive to place a crystal in Leon’s hand.
Her older sister Vanessa reaches her among the Blaze reinforcements. Vanessa shares Vesper’s long brown hair, while her deep red eyes and ember-red armor carry the unmistakable marks of her Blaze Arc.
Vanessa follows Vesper’s gaze toward Leon. “You still in love with that boy?”
Vesper answers without hesitation.
“Always.”
Later that night aboard the Cloud Breaker, Vesper hears Leon admit that rushing into Scorchvale nearly got them killed. She also hears him acknowledge that Vesper and the reinforcements changed the battle.
She goes below deck.
Leon follows.
Inside Vesper’s quarters is an old sketch of them at Aurora: Leon holding her from behind while stealing a kiss against her cheek, Vesper laughing in his arms. It is a piece of the life they had before their love became tangled inside military decisions, grief, and fear.
Leon finds her in the Captain’s alcove.
Vesper closes the door.
This time they stop trying to resolve their relationship from opposite sides of a battlefield.
Later, lying together beneath the moonlight, Leon brushes Vesper’s hair away from her face. “I love you.”
Vesper kisses the corner of his mouth. “I love you too. Even when we fight.”
They are together again.
Vesper and Lilith
Their reconciliation allows Leon and Vesper to begin imagining the future again.
At Emerald Spire, during a night that should have been filled with formal clothes and celebration, Leon walks through the upper halls thinking about what he wants to tell Vesper when he reaches her. He has begun imagining Dragontear again: quiet, fewer missions, and the life together they once dreamed about.
He never gets the chance to finish rehearsing.
The Blood Legion attacks.
On another balcony, Vesper finds herself facing Lilith.
Lilith is one of the Blood Legion’s elite Veinbreakers, a fallen Aurelian with enormous regeneration, Crimson power, a massive blood axe, and enough combat ability to threaten some of the finest young warriors in the kingdom.
Vesper faces her in an elegant emerald gown and white gloves.
Lilith initially drives the Crimson Sleep dagger through Vesper’s side, but Vesper’s Terran power burns the spreading veins away. Lilith realizes that Vesper’s healing is strong enough to resist a shallow strike.
Then Vesper takes control of the fight.
She closes inside the reach of Lilith’s axe, heals through her own injuries, and drives Terran-powered blows hard enough to buckle the Veinbreaker’s armor. When Lilith attacks again, Vesper catches the weapon by its haft and crushes it in one hand.
Without the axe between them, Vesper overwhelms her.
She drives Lilith backward with punches, knees, and kicks before lifting the Veinbreaker and repeatedly smashing her into the balcony hard enough to crack the stone beneath them. Lilith’s armor breaks apart and her Crimson mist begins to fail.
Vesper releases her and stands over one of the Blood Legion’s most dangerous warriors with emerald power gathered around her fist.
Vesper tells Lilith, “You’re done.”
In direct combat, she is.
As Vesper moves to finish the fight, Lilith slips beneath the strike and drives the hidden Crimson Sleep dagger deep into Vesper’s lower abdomen. This time the curse spreads faster than her Terran Arc can purge it. Emerald light fights against the Crimson veins, but they continue climbing through her body.
Lilith tells Vesper what the dagger carries.
The Crimson Sleep.
Vesper still tries to advance on her. She still threatens Lilith and refuses to simply collapse while there is strength left in her body.
Then Leon reaches the balcony.
His attention goes immediately to Vesper: her emerald gown torn from the battle, blood across her white gloves, Crimson veins spreading over her skin.
Leon turns on Lilith.
White lightning tears through the Veinbreaker’s chest and throws her over the balcony.
Leon does not watch Lilith fall.
He goes straight to Vesper.
Her knees give way, and Leon catches her in his arms.
Even through the fear, Vesper looks at what remains of the evening gown and manages to tell him, “Too late. The dress is ruined.”
Leon looks at her. “You’re still the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
For a moment, Vesper is still able to tease him about arriving without changing into anything formal. Then the fear beneath the humor finally reaches the surface.
Vesper looks at Leon. “Leon, I think I’m dying.”
Neither of them yet understands what the Crimson Sleep will do. Vesper only knows that the curse is spreading through her, her strength is disappearing, and she is terrified.
“Leon, I’m scared.”
Leon holds her and gives her somewhere else to look.
He tells Vesper about Dragontear. A quiet house beside the water. Morning light across the waves. A life without endless wars and missions. Children filling the home with the noise and love neither of them has ever stopped wanting.
Vesper tells him that she used to dream about having two daughters with him. Sometimes she could see them clearly, running toward Leon with their little arms held out.
Leon asks what their names were.
Vesper admits she never knew.
“I just loved them already.”
Leon leans closer. “Then let’s name them now. Right here.”
Vesper chooses the first.
“Haley.”
Then she asks Leon to choose the second.
Leon says, “Hanna.”
The name carries a memory with it. At the Frosted Peaks, when Leon believed he was losing Lance, a Terran healer named Hanna reached them, closed the terrible wounds through his best friend’s body, and helped give Lance back to him.
Now Leon gives her name to one of the daughters he still believes he and Vesper will someday meet.
Vesper smiles through her fear.
“Remember their names for me, Leon. Keep them somewhere warm.”
Leon refuses to accept that this is where their future ends. He tells Vesper that he is going to fix this even if he has to tear the sky apart to do it.
Vesper looks at him. “Leon, I love you.”
Leon kisses her forehead. “I love you more.”
Then the Crimson Sleep takes her consciousness.
For the first time in her life, the woman who has healed so many others becomes someone Aurelia cannot immediately wake.
Willow eventually joins her beneath the Sleep. Hope and Lloyd follow, while more Aurelians across the kingdom are taken by the same curse. Leon and everyone still standing search desperately for its source and eventually discover the deeper danger: the Crimson Sleep is a slow poison. If the Crimson Heart survives long enough, the sleepers will eventually die.
So Aurelia goes after the Heart.
Leon leads the assault against it, carrying the promise he made to Vesper with him all the way to the end. The Crimson Heart is destroyed, the curse finally breaks across Aurelia, and Vesper wakes.
When she returns to Aurora, Leon is there.
Vesper remembers the early years when the whole world seemed impossibly large around the two of them. She tells Leon that she heard how much of the kingdom he carried while she was gone. Leon admits that there were moments when he almost dropped it, but the people around him kept catching it.
Vesper tells him that he will never have to carry it alone.
Leon holds her. “I love you, Vess.”
Vesper smiles. “I love you more, Leon Tempest.”
Charlotte watches the two of them together and gives voice to something their lives have already proven.
“You two were always fated to find each other. Nothing in this world or the next will ever pull you apart. I have seen it. This union is beyond all undoing.”
Then Charlotte adds, with complete certainty, “And my visions are never wrong.”
Ascendant Vesper - The Golden Dawn
By The Golden Dawn, Vesper has risen to Ascendant of Aurora Arc Academy and become one of the most accomplished Terran healers in the kingdom.
Her reserves are immense, her Wisps allow her restoration to spread far beyond her own hands, and the precision of her healing lets her repair injuries so completely that even the lingering Wound Echo can disappear. The physical strength that once allowed her to overpower Lilith has never left her either.
Vesper remains both healer and warrior.
She is also Leon’s wife.
And the future they once imagined beneath Aurora’s trees, then held onto while the Crimson Sleep was taking her, has become real.
Haley.
Hanna.
Two little girls with long brown hair and emerald eyes grow up surrounded by their parents and the enormous family Aurora has become.
Their Arcs reveal different pieces of that inheritance. Haley is Terran, and emerald healing answers her hands naturally from childhood. Hanna is Dual Arc like Leon, carrying Specter lightning over a Terran foundation.
Vesper trains them.
Leon spoils them.
The girls occasionally abandon their lessons because showing Papa whatever they have just learned is clearly more important. Haley proudly heals training cuts with soft emerald light, while Hanna demonstrates her progress by firing white lightning into a nearby crystal.
Leon decides the crystal probably was not important.
Vesper eventually appears in the doorway looking for both daughters.
The girls immediately call, “Mama!”
The great warriors who once wondered whether they would survive long enough to see Dragontear have become parents.
That family life never removes Vesper from her responsibilities to Aurelia. During another enormous battle, wounded fighters pour back into Aurora from across the Aurelian Capital. Vesper remains among the Academy healers because she is one of the strongest Terrans there, restoring the injured as quickly as they arrive even while part of her desperately wants to be wherever Leon is fighting.
Hanna and Haley eventually come running to her.
They want their father.
Hanna’s fear flashes through the same white lightning she inherited from Leon, while Haley buries herself against Vesper and admits that she is scared. Vesper gathers both daughters into her arms, tells them that she misses him too, and stays with them while continuing to hold together the people Aurora keeps bringing home.
After the battle finally ends, the family rests together beneath one of Aurora’s trees.
Leon lies beside Vesper with their hands joined. Haley sleeps against Vesper beneath the edge of her cloak, while Hanna lies across Leon’s chest with one arm curled around his neck.
Hanna eventually wakes just enough to look at her father.
She asks Leon, “Are you still here?”
Leon tightens an arm around her. “Still here.”
Satisfied, Hanna puts her head back down.
Vesper smiles without opening her eyes. “That is the fourth time.”
Leon looks at their daughter. “She can check as many times as she needs.”
Vesper lies beside him with Haley tucked against her.
The two daughters they once only imagined are sleeping safely between them.
They made it.
Hero of Aurelia
Across her life, Vesper becomes one of the greatest Terrans produced by Aurora Arc Academy.
She survives the Blood Legion attack that destroys her childhood home and protects Ivy and Rosie before she possesses anything resembling formal combat experience. She crosses Aurelia toward Aurora beside Leon, becomes an exceptional dragon rider, wins one of the great races of her youth, and continues fighting after a Devastator kills the dragon she loves.
Her Wisps awaken in the middle of a Zethra battle, allowing Vesper to spread healing across an entire battlefield while Leon and his Phantoms guard her.
She learns to fly again upon a sky-chaser.
She kills the Blood Princess Verena with Leon’s greatsword.
She reaches Aurora and develops into an exceptional Terran whose restoration can erase wounds and Wound Echoes that lesser healers may be forced to leave behind.
She becomes a Captain and builds another family around herself at Emerald Spire.
She fights beside Ruby, Violet, Willow, and the people who gather around her.
She brings the reinforcements that help turn Scorchvale.
She faces Lilith in an evening gown and physically overwhelms one of the Blood Legion’s elite Veinbreakers before the hidden Crimson Sleep dagger changes the battle.
She survives the Sleep.
She wakes.
She returns to Aurora.
She marries Leon.
She rises to Ascendant.
And through all of it, Vesper never loses the compassion that made healing the natural language of her Arc.
When battles end, Vesper looks for the wounded.
When someone she loves is frightened, she stays.
When Leon is hurting, she can usually see it long before he admits it.
When her daughters come running, she opens her arms.
The hands capable of breaking Veinbreaker armor become some of the safest hands in Aurelia.
The Life at Dragontear
Eventually, the fighting stops asking so much of Vesper.
She and Leon leave Aurora Arc Academy with Hanna and Haley and return to Dragontear.
The place Leon promised to show Vesper when they were still young becomes their home.
Leon becomes Captain of the Guard, while Vesper finally gets the life she began imagining long before either of them knew whether they would survive long enough to reach it.
A home beside the sea.
Leon.
Two daughters.
Morning light across Dragontear’s cliffs.
Children growing beneath an open sky.
Friends arriving from every corner of Aurelia.
Long evenings where nobody is waiting for a mission bell to ring.
Hanna and Haley grow up and become heroes in their own lives. The Tempest family continues, and Vesper and Leon grow old together through the extraordinarily long lives Aurelians are capable of living.
The boy Vesper first kissed in a mountain cottage is still the man beside her when the sea turns gold over Dragontear.
The daughters she imagined beneath the trees at Aurora are real.
The names she and Leon chose while the Crimson Sleep was taking her belong to two women she has watched grow from little girls.
Haley.
Hanna.
Vesper gets to meet them.
She gets to raise them.
She gets to watch them become themselves.
The house beside the water is real.
They made it there.
Eventually, when their long lives finally reach their end, Leon and Vesper return to the sky within hours of one another.
Charlotte had once told them that nothing in this world or the next would ever pull them apart.
She was right.
They found each other after the ruins.
They found each other after the breakup.
They found each other after Emerald.
They found each other after the Crimson Sleep.
And in the end, they found their way to Dragontear.
Together.
The Boy Who Closed the Sky
Dante is a white-haired Specter warrior with clear sapphire-blue eyes, a stubborn competitive streak, and an instinct to keep fighting long after most people would have stayed down. Earnest, loyal, quietly funny, and fiercely protective of the people he loves, Dante grows from an orphan raised at Hearthhaven into one of Aurora Arc Academy’s most extraordinary young warriors.
Dante is Dual Arc, carrying Specter as the dominant expression of his power with a Flow foundation beneath it. His white lightning gives him tremendous speed and striking power, while Flow helps him develop greater control and precision. His personal Resonance eventually manifests as living armor formed from hardened Specter lightning around his body and gauntlets.
Later, a mysterious scar over Dante’s heart gives him access to something entirely separate from his natural Arc: an ancient power capable of temporarily shattering Arc Energy and eventually closing the Fractures that have haunted Aurelia for generations.
The Boy from Hearthhaven
Dante never knows his parents. His mother and father die protecting him while he is still a baby, leaving him to grow up at Hearthhaven alongside other children whose lives began with similar losses.
That is where he meets Izzy.
Izzy never knew her parents either, and the two grow up together until friendship becomes one of the most permanent things either of them has. They train beside one another, travel beyond Hearthhaven, face Zethra and Blood Legion threats, and gradually become formidable young Aurelians in their own right.
Eventually, both are invited to Aurora Arc Academy.
For Dante, Aurora becomes more than another place to train. It gives the orphan from Hearthhaven a larger family, a chance to understand the power he inherited from parents he never knew, and a future stretching far beyond the life he once imagined for himself.
The Verdant Abyss
Dante’s first major journey from Aurora begins when Charlotte selects him alongside Izzy, Dustin, Clover, and Kaden to deliver an Aetherlock Orb to Captain Leon Tempest.
The mission itself reaches back to a tragedy that began before Dante ever became involved. Seven travelling artificers had been exploring Aurelia when they discovered a colossal diamond vessel hidden within the Verdant Abyss. Among them were a mother and daughter who had simply set out to see the kingdom together. The group also found an ancient codex they believed explained what had been imprisoned inside the vessel, but Blood Legion raiders killed them before they could bring their discovery home. Their records survived, eventually leading Leon’s group to the killers and allowing Astra to recover and open the codex.
What Astra discovers is terrifying. The creature inside the vessel had once been created for an impossible purpose: to close the Rifts themselves. Instead, the Entity turned against those who made it. Its power could shatter Arc Energy, leaving even great warriors unable to use the abilities that should have protected them.
That discovery is why Dante and the others are sent with the Aetherlock Orb.
Their journey becomes dangerous before they ever reach Leon. A Blood Legion warrior named Havok attacks the young team and destroys their skiff. The five Cadets fight back hard enough to prove themselves dangerous, but Havok eventually overwhelms them. Leon, already searching for the overdue group, reaches them before Havok can finish Dante and brings the battle to an end.
The Cadets join Leon’s crew aboard the Cloud Breaker and continue toward the Verdant Abyss with him. Dante quickly begins looking up to the Chosen Captain who saved them, while Leon starts taking an interest in the talented young Specter. He even lets Dante learn to handle the enormous Cloud Breaker, giving him his first opportunity to fly a skyship of that scale.
When Dante tells Leon and Lloyd that they are even cooler than the stories he read about them, Lloyd tells him, “You’re in them now.”
Soon afterward, he is.
The Aetherlock Orb fails and the Entity breaks free. Hope and Lance are the first to face it and are badly wounded before Izzy and Dante join the battle. The Entity’s strange ability to disrupt Arc Energy makes it extraordinarily difficult to fight, and Dante is eventually forced to watch the creature seize Izzy and begin crushing her.
“Not her.”
Dante’s Resonance awakens.
Living armor of hardened white lightning forms around him, transforming the young Specter into a vastly more dangerous fighter. He saves Izzy and continues battling the Entity, but his new power is still uncontrolled and enormously taxing. The creature eventually tears through his armor and nearly kills him before Vesper and Leon reach him.
Leon tells the wounded Cadet, “Your story doesn’t end here, Dante.” Dante manages a tired smile.
Leon, Vesper, Lloyd, and the others eventually bring the Entity down.
In its final moments, however, the creature drives a crystalline claw through Dante’s chest and into his heart. Ancient white power floods through him before the Entity shatters, leaving behind a glowing scar shaped like a fractured Rift.
Neither Dante nor Aurora understands exactly what has been left inside him.
They only know that it is something Aurelia has never seen before.
One of Leon’s Prodigies
When Vesper and Willow are taken by the Crimson Sleep, Leon gives the younger Cadets the opportunity to return safely to Aurora.
Dante refuses.
“I’m staying.”
He remains with Leon through the journey that follows, and Leon begins personally training him. Dante learns to better control the living armor he awakened in the Verdant Abyss, separate his Resonance from Arc Surge, and use his tremendous natural power without exhausting himself immediately.
Leon gradually becomes far more than Dante’s Captain. He becomes his mentor and one of the most important people in his life.
At Everfrost, Dante encounters Sai, an Ascendant who has become a Riftwraith. When Sai eventually overwhelms the younger warriors around him, Dante deliberately reaches into the foreign power beneath his scar for the first time.
One punch temporarily shatters Sai’s Arc Energy. His Veil collapses, his Resonance disappears, and for several moments the Riftwraith Ascendant is left without access to the power that made him so dangerous.
Sai’s Arc eventually begins rebuilding, proving Dante’s nullification is temporary. Lloyd delivers the attack that finally kills him, but Dante has discovered what part of the Entity’s ancient power can do.
It can shatter Arc Energy.
The group briefly hopes this might allow Dante to break the Crimson Sleep itself. It cannot. The curse reacts violently when he tries, revealing that whatever powers the Sleep is something different from the Arc Energy Dante has learned to destroy.
His gift is extraordinary.
It is not limitless.
We’ve Given Enough
Dawnforge reveals the other half of what the Entity once existed to do.
During a devastating battle around the citadel, Lance disappears after taking an enemy through a portal and striking a colossal Behemoth. His Arc signature vanishes, and Leon believes his best friend has died.
Dante watches his Captain prepare to throw himself back into the battle regardless of whether he survives. By then Leon is the man who saved Dante, trained him, believed in him, and became the closest thing the orphan from Hearthhaven has ever known to a father.
Dante refuses to lose him too.
“We’ve given enough.”
Drawing upon the ancient power inside his scar, Dante unleashes an attack that tears through the battlefield and reaches the active Fracture beyond the Behemoth.
The wound in the sky closes.
For generations, Aurelia has fought whatever came through the Fractures. Dante becomes the first known Aurelian to force one shut.
The ancient codex had described a creature created to close the Rifts and shatter Arc power. Now both abilities have survived inside Dante.
The significance of what he has become is quickly felt across the kingdom. Riftraze attacks Dawnforge as Riftwraith forces converge upon the citadel, and it becomes increasingly clear that the young warrior capable of closing their gateways has become someone they cannot afford to ignore.
I’m Going After My Captain
Dante remains at Dawnforge while recovering from the enormous cost of closing the Fracture. Then he learns that Hope and Lloyd have both fallen beneath the Crimson Sleep and that Leon and Violet have continued onward without them.
Dante refuses to stay behind.
“I’m going after my captain.”
General Wavebreaker warns him that closing the Fracture has changed everything. Dante is now one of the most important targets in Aurelia, and allowing him to simply leave the protection of Dawnforge could get him killed.
Dante does not back down. He makes it clear that if he has to fight his way out of Dawnforge to reach Leon, he will.
Before the confrontation can go any further, the danger becomes immediate.
Riftwraiths attack Dawnforge Citadel.
The assault confirms exactly how aggressively Dante is being hunted. With the citadel under attack, Cressida gives Dante a pendant capable of concealing his Arc signature and helps him, Izzy, Dustin, Astra, and Ruby escape among the evacuation vessels while the Radiant Tide holds the enemy back.
Dante leaves Dawnforge with one purpose.
Find Leon.
Their journey brings them something none of them expected.
Lance is alive.
The warrior they believed had died at Dawnforge survived, and his Resonance has evolved dramatically through the ordeal. With Lance beside them again, the group finally has a way to reach Leon. Following Astra’s message phoenix, Lance opens portal after portal across enormous distances, carrying their vessel through Aurelia toward Dragontear.
The Cadets are going back for their Captain.
The Battle for Dragontear
By the time Dante reaches Dragontear, the two great threads of his journey have finally begun to meet.
While Dante has been discovering what the Entity left inside him, the Vein Weaver has been building the Crimson Heart into something capable of consuming far more than the people already trapped beneath the Crimson Sleep. Every battle, every fallen fighter, and every Aurelian taken by the curse has fed Arc Energy into the Heart until it possesses enough power for the Vein Weaver’s final assault.
The target is Dragontear.
The Heart transforms into a colossal living Behemoth, and from it comes a vast Crimson Wave carrying concentrated Blood Legion corruption across the bay. The wave is not meant merely to destroy Dragontear. Anyone it reaches will be corrupted in the same way Violet was, turning the people of the village into part of the Legion. Leon realizes that ordinary attacks cannot simply overpower it and that charging into the wave himself would only allow the corruption to take him too.
Then Lance brings Dante and the others through the sky above Dragontear.
Astra sees the answer.
The wave is Arc Energy.
Dante can shatter Arc Energy.
The power carried all the way from an ancient Entity in the Verdant Abyss finally finds the moment Aurelia needs it for.
Dante breaks the Crimson Wave.
White power from the scar fractures the corruption across its entire surface until the enormous tide collapses into harmless mist above Dragontear. The weapon meant to corrupt an entire village disappears before it can reach the people below.
A discovery made by seven artificers simply exploring the kingdom has travelled through the entire story and helped save one of its oldest homes.
Dante’s battle is still not finished.
The Vein Weaver remains.
Before Dante goes after him, Izzy asks what the plan is. Dante turns toward the girl who has been beside him since Hearthhaven, kisses her, and finally says what has lived between them for years.“I love you, Izzy.I always have.”
Then he launches into the fight.
Izzy watches him go.“I love you too…”
Fist Through the Vein
The Vein Weaver is far beyond the level most young warriors could hope to face. Dante goes anyway.
His scar makes him uniquely dangerous to the ancient creature because every clean strike can disrupt the immense currents of Arc Energy protecting him. Dante manages to fight at a level most Chosen would struggle even to survive against, repeatedly damaging the Vein Weaver and eventually driving one brutal punch into him.
“That one was for my captain.”
When the Vein Weaver tells Dante that he cannot defeat him alone, Dante answers, “The warriors of Aurelia are never alone.”
Dragontear proves him right.
The village’s defenders surround the battlefield and unleash everything they have. Dante uses the opening they create to reach the Vein Weaver and drive his fist through his chest, shattering the Arc Energy moving through him. Together, Dante and Dragontear’s fleet catastrophically wound the Vein Weaver and temporarily bring him down.
Dante collapses from the effort, and Izzy reaches him immediately and carries him back to safety.
The Vein Weaver survives.
Still carrying the damage Dante and Dragontear inflicted upon him, he later returns for one final confrontation with Leon Tempest.
Leon kills him above Dragontear.
Home Again
Dante returns to Aurora as one of the young heroes of the Crimson Sleep.
The scar has made him a target, and Charlotte knows the Riftwraiths will continue hunting the warrior who has proven capable of closing the very gateways they depend upon. Leon makes equally certain that Dante will never face that future alone.
The orphan who once arrived at Aurora wondering whether it could become home now has an Academy full of people around him.
He has friends.
He has a Captain who became his mentor.
And he has Izzy.
During the celebration after Dragontear, Dante takes the hand of the girl who grew up beside him at Hearthhaven and draws her into a slow dance beneath Aurora’s lights. The friendship that carried them through most of their lives has finally become the love both of them had been moving toward for years.
The Golden Dawn – Part One
By The Golden Dawn, Dante has grown far beyond the young Cadet Leon first rescued on the road to the Verdant Abyss.
His strange connection to the Fractures is now understood well enough that Aurelia knows what he represents. When new tears appear across the kingdom, Dante becomes one of the warriors capable of doing something generations before him could only dream about.
He can close them.
The battles surrounding those Fractures are still enormous. Dante cannot simply walk beneath a broken sky and end the danger alone. Aurelia’s fighters, fleets, dragons, and Spires battle to contain whatever comes through and create the opportunity Dante needs to reach the wound itself.
His role has changed.
Once, Leon and the older heroes fought to keep Dante alive long enough for him to understand what he could become.
Now armies fight beside him because they know what happens if Dante reaches the sky.
It closes.
The Golden Dawn – Part Two
Dante continues serving beside Aurora as the next generation rises around him.
The kingdom’s enemies understand the danger he represents, and Dante remains one of Aurelia’s most important warriors whenever Fractures and immense concentrations of Arc Energy become part of the battlefield.
During the later battle against Abyss, Dante is nearly killed before Atlas and Iris reach him. The younger heroes who have grown up beneath the protection of Leon’s generation now become the ones protecting the people who came before them, carrying forward the same instinct Dante himself learned years earlier.
Someone reaches you.
Then one day, you become the person who reaches someone else.
Dante survives and continues fighting beneath the same fractured sky that has followed him since the Entity first marked his heart.
The Answer Beneath the Shattered Sky
Dante’s story remains unfinished.
He continues serving Aurora, continues learning what the ancient scar over his heart truly contains, and remains one of Leon Tempest’s great prodigies.
Izzy remains beside him too.
His oldest friend.
His partner.
The girl who knew him at Hearthhaven before Aurora, before Leon, before the Entity, and before anyone in the wider kingdom knew his name.
There are still adventures ahead of them.
There are still mysteries surrounding the Entity.
There are still Fractures in the sky.
And Aurelia has still not discovered a permanent way to stop those wounds from appearing.
But the kingdom has something it never possessed before.
Dante.
For generations, Aurelians could only look upward when the sky fractured and prepare themselves for whatever came through.
Now one of them can look back at the wound.
And close it.
The Flame That Kept Its Promise
Kaden is a Blaze warrior with dark red hair, intense red eyes, a broad frame, and the scars of a childhood spent surviving Dragon’s Maw. He arrives at Aurora Arc Academy wearing patched armor and carrying tremendous natural power, but almost no belief that life has ever intended anything good for him.
Guarded, blunt, fiercely competitive, and difficult to reach, Kaden initially understands the world through loss. He has spent so long fighting simply to survive that kindness makes him uncomfortable and hope often feels like something meant for other people. Beneath that hard exterior, however, is a deeply loyal young man who desperately wants to become better than the world that raised him.
His Blaze Arc eventually develops into one of the most spectacular Resonances of his generation: a colossal draconic Arc form built around Kaden’s human body, covered in obsidian scales split by molten light. The power he fears may never awaken eventually becomes an expression of everything he learns to fight for.
The Boy from Dragon’s Maw
Kaden grows up in Dragon’s Maw without the formal training or safety offered by Aurelia’s great Spires. By the time he reaches Aurora, survival has already taught him how to fight.
His first major appearance at the Academy places him opposite Dustin in an exhibition match. The contrast between them could hardly be greater. Dustin comes from Azure Spire with exceptional Flow training, an easy smile, and the confidence of someone who has always known there will be another tomorrow. Kaden comes from the Maw with patched armor, scars, instinct, and grit.
Dustin tries to reach him even before the fight begins, telling Kaden that surviving Dragon’s Maw and reaching Aurora means something.
Kaden answers, “Means I’m still breathing.Doesn’t mean I owe you a conversation.”
When Dustin wishes him luck, Kaden quietly replies, “Luck’s never found me before.”
Kaden nearly wins.
Then Dustin’s Resonance awakens.
Frost wolves overwhelm him, ending the fight just as Kaden seems capable of taking it. While the Academy erupts around Dustin, Kaden remains alone upon the sand and looks toward the open sky.
“…Guess fate picks its favorites.”
Clover is the one who comes to him.
While healing his injuries, she accidentally discovers the memory-weave Kaden carries inside his armor. It shows a red-haired little girl with his eyes standing inside a poor home beneath the dark towers of Dragon’s Maw.
His sister.
Clover tells him that she must be proud of how far he has come.
Kaden’s answer is quiet.
“She’s dead.Been dead a long time.”
He takes the memory-weave from Clover, folds it with immense care, and puts it safely back inside his armor.
The girl in that little image remains with him through everything that follows.
Scars That Never Close
Kaden is soon chosen alongside Dante, Izzy, Dustin, and Clover for a mission carrying an Aetherlock Orb toward Leon Tempest.
The journey nearly kills him.
A Blood Legion warrior named Havok destroys the Cadets’ skiff and overwhelms the young team after a brutal fight. Kaden is blasted far from the others and left broken against the rocks, bleeding badly while corruption spreads through his wounds.
Leon reaches the battle in time to save the others and kill Havok.
Then Dante tells him Kaden is missing.
Leon immediately goes looking for him.
Kaden lies alone beneath the gray sky believing his first real mission is simply another entry in a lifetime of losses.
“Of course my first real mission ends like this.”
He wonders whether he is going to die there and remembers a promise he still has not managed to keep.
“I guess I can’t beat fate after all…I’m used to losing at this point.Tournaments, fights, everything…always the same.”
As his strength fades, the bitterness finally gives way to something smaller.
“I just thought…if I kept trying…pushed hard enough…one day I might actually get a win.”
Leon’s voice answers him.
“You already did, cadet. You’re still breathing.”
Kaden manages a bitter laugh.“Breathing…That’s your idea of a win?”
“It’s the start of one.Fate doesn’t get to decide you’re finished while you’re still breathing.”
Kaden looks at him.“…Maybe.But guys like me…we don’t get the rest.”
Leon places a hand upon his shoulder.
“Then we’ll change that.Starting now.”
When Kaden asks about the others and learns that everyone survived, something inside him finally loosens.
“Thank you.”
Then he loses consciousness.
Leon stays beside him.
“I’ll help you get that win.”
Kaden wakes aboard the Cloud Breaker to something just as unfamiliar as being rescued.
A warm table.
Food.
Dante and Izzy.
Dustin laughing.
Clover playing her lute beside the fire.
Leon telling him the mission is intact and that, for now, Kaden should simply sit down and eat.
Kaden does.
For a little while, the hollow inside him becomes quieter.
The Fire That Would Not Wake
As Kaden continues traveling with Leon’s squad, one insecurity follows him.
His Resonance will not appear.
He struggles to hold Arc Surge and watches other young Aurelians reach abilities that continue to elude him. During training aboard the Cloud Breaker, Kaden finally admits how he sees himself.
“I’m just behind everyone else.”
Leon refuses to accept it.
He reminds Kaden that simply making it out of Dragon’s Maw and into Aurora is already an extraordinary path, and that he never needed a perfect Surge or polished Resonance to belong there.
“It’ll come when it’s ready. And when it does…I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot more than anyone expects.”
Kaden has been trying for months.
Leon tells him, “The ones that fight hardest to wake usually burn brightest when they finally do.”
Kaden studies him.“You actually believe that?”
“Yeah.I do.”
Leon believes in Kaden’s fire before Kaden does.
The Dragons
A wounded flight of dragons gives Kaden another kind of victory.
In Dragon’s Maw, dragons were weapons. Overseers used them to maintain fear and control, and Kaden learned that when wings appeared overhead, you kept your head down.
His sister somehow saw something else.
She would sneak outside at night simply to watch the dragons fly. She dreamed that one day she would ride one herself.
“She never got the chance.”
When Leon discovers a badly wounded dragon flight, he takes Kaden and Clover with him. Clover can heal them, while Leon trusts Kaden to understand the difference between an injured creature panicking and a genuine attack.
After Clover heals one of the mothers, two young red dragons begin playing around Kaden’s sky-chaser.
Leon realizes they want to race him.
Kaden initially refuses.
Leon annoys him into doing it anyway.
Soon Kaden is racing through the open sky with two young dragons weaving around his platform. For the first time, he does not see monsters or weapons. He sees living creatures flying simply because they are free enough to enjoy it.
“She would’ve loved this.”
Kaden could beat them.
He lets the dragons reach the mountain first.
When Leon catches up, the smirk on his face makes it clear he knows exactly what happened.
“You could have won.”
Kaden watches the young dragons celebrating their victory.
“I didn’t want to.”
Leon says nothing else.
He does not need to.
The Weight of Two Lives
Kaden and Clover eventually catch up with Leon at Emberfall while he is fighting the Veinbreaker Hemmara.
By then, Leon has already been trapped in a vicious pattern. Whenever he gains ground against Hemmara, she fires another attack toward the civilian sky-skiffs evacuating Emberfall. Leon repeatedly abandons opportunities to strike her so he can intercept the blasts instead.
He stops every one.
Hemmara realizes exactly how to control the fight: keep threatening innocent people and force Leon to keep choosing them.
Then Kaden and Clover arrive.
Kaden hits Hemmara with a massive fireball while Clover cuts through her armor. For a moment, they give Leon the help he desperately needs.
Then Hemmara turns on them.
A blast catches Kaden and Clover in midair and leaves both lying broken upon the harvest fields.
Hemmara sees her opportunity.
Two attacks begin forming.
One is aimed at another civilian sky-skiff filled with people trying to escape.
The other is aimed directly at Kaden and Clover.
Leon has time to stop one.
Kaden can barely move, but he raises a shaking hand and points toward the fleeing vessel.
The gesture says everything.
Save them.Not me.
Leon understands.
Damn it, Kaden. I see it. I know.
But I see you too.
Leon runs toward Kaden and Clover.
The other blast reaches the civilian vessel.
He reaches his Cadets, plants himself between them and the oncoming attack, raises his greatsword, and takes the full force against the blade.
“Not them.”
The blast shatters.
Kaden stares at Leon’s back through fading vision.
“You…you chose us?”
Leon did.
And after Leon kills Hemmara, an entire Blood Legion fleet appears over Emberfall.
Kaden and Clover can barely stand.
Leon still turns toward it.
Then he starts running.
Alone.
The Dragon of Emberfall
Clover manages to give Kaden enough healing to move.
Kaden watches Leon charging toward an entire army.
And everything comes back.
The jagged rocks where Leon found him dying and refused to leave him there.
The Cloud Breaker, where Leon looked past every failed Surge and told him his fire would eventually burn brighter than anyone expected.
The young red dragons, where Leon gave him an afternoon of happiness he had never believed he was allowed to have.
And Emberfall.
Leon choosing him.
For most of Kaden’s life, whenever he fell, the world simply kept walking.
Leon stopped.
Leon turned.
Leon stood guard.
Kaden finally understands what has always driven his Captain.
His heroism was never some cold sense of duty.
It was love.
Loyalty.
People.
And now Kaden has people too.
Tears run down his face as he fixes his eyes upon Leon.
“I made a promise to my sister to be better…This is me keeping it.”
Kaden runs after his Captain.
His Resonance finally awakens.
Blaze Energy erupts around his human body and expands into something colossal. Obsidian scales form around him, split by molten light. Vast wings unfold. A draconic head rises over Emberfall.
The boy whose sister dreamed of dragons becomes one.
Kaden tears through the Blood Legion armada until the fleet threatening Emberfall is gone.
When the enormous Arc form finally dissolves, Kaden looks toward Leon.
“We won, Captain…”
Then the lesson from those frozen rocks returns, except now the words belong to Kaden too.
“We’re still breathing…”
He finally understands what Leon meant.
Kaden looks at the man who kept reaching for him.
“Thank you, Captain…thank you for saving me and Clover…”
Leon rests a hand upon his shoulder.
“The Arcs that fight the hardest to wake up…really do end up burning the brightest.”
Then, much more simply:
“I’m glad you’re both still here, Kaden.”
The boy who believed fate picked its favorites has finally gotten his win.
Learning to Be Better
Emberfall celebrates Kaden.
Children crowd around the bewildered Blaze warrior asking whether he really was the enormous dragon they watched destroy the Blood Legion fleet. Kaden, who has spent most of his life expecting people to fear or dismiss him, has absolutely no idea what to do with their admiration.
Eventually, the guarded expression gives way to a small, awkward smile.
Clover stays close.
She hugs him after the battle, and while the two look toward Leon, she admits that despite being only a few years older than them, their Captain sometimes feels like a father.
Kaden answers quietly.
“He does.Closest thing I’ve ever had to one.”
Later, Kaden and Clover join Leon upon a hill above Emberfall.
Clover takes out the lute she has carried through everything and tells them it belonged to her mother, who used to play lullabies for her when she could not sleep.
Kaden realizes something uncomfortable.
He never asked.
Clover has spent all this time caring about his sister, his pain, and everything he survived, and Kaden never asked what she had lost.
Then Clover asks Leon whether anyone is still waiting for him back home.
“They’re gone.I’m all that’s left.”
The words hit Kaden just as hard.
He had never asked Leon either.
For so long, Kaden has been trapped inside what happened to him that he barely noticed the wounds carried by the people who kept reaching toward him.
That is part of what he wants to change.
“I’ve been trying to be better ever since I got to the Spire.I know I’m still rough around the edges, but…”
Leon stops him gently.
“Kaden, you just saved a whole village. You’re doing just fine.”
Clover keeps playing.
Kaden stays beside her and Leon while the sun goes down over Emberfall.
The Crimson Heart
Kaden travels onward with Leon and Clover toward Dragontear, where the Blood Legion finally unleashes the centerpiece of the Crimson Sleep.
The Crimson Heart has been fed through the war until it constructs a colossal Behemoth-like creature capable of releasing waves of corruption across Dragontear.
Dante destroys the first Crimson Wave.
Then Astra realizes the Heart is preparing another.
Kaden moves.
He launches toward the creature on a sky-chaser and releases the Resonance that first awakened at Emberfall.
The dragon returns.
Kaden collides with the colossal creature above Dragontear and forces his Arc form through layers of corrupted flesh until one enormous claw reaches the source itself.
Kaden tears the Crimson Heart out of the Behemoth’s chest.
He holds the still-beating organ within the dragon’s claws.
Astra strikes next, freezing the Heart completely through.
Then Izzy launches from the Wavebreaker with her great hammer and smashes the frozen organ apart.
The Heart is destroyed.
The Behemoth collapses.
The centerpiece of the Vein Weaver’s entire Crimson Sleep plan dies above Dragontear.
Kaden gets the Heart out.
Astra freezes it.
Izzy finishes it.
Three young Aurelians destroy the thing an ancient monster built to consume a kingdom.
And somewhere within that victory is the answer to an earlier choice.
Kaden was once the boy lying broken while someone decided his life was still worth reaching for. That life does not end at Emberfall. It keeps moving. Kaden destroys the armada threatening one village, fights through the Crimson Sleep, reaches Dragontear, and tears the Heart from the creature preparing to corrupt countless more people.
One life saved becomes a warrior who goes on to save countless others.
The choice to keep Kaden in the world keeps travelling long after the moment itself is over.
Brothers Forged in Fire
After Dragontear, Kaden returns to Aurora.
Near the Academy fountain, he stands beside the young man who once defeated him before thousands of cheering Cadets.
Dustin.
There is no prince and underdog anymore.
The book calls them what they have become:
brothers forged in fire.
Dustin asks how Kaden is getting along with his dragon form before quietly telling him that his sister would have loved it.
Kaden looks toward the sparkling water.
“Yeah…she would have.”
Dustin continues.
“She’d be really proud of the man you’ve become.”
Kaden releases a slow breath.
“Thanks, man. I needed to hear that.”
Then his attention drifts toward Clover.
She is nearby playing her lute.
Kaden joins her on the bench.
Clover smiles.“Staying for the music?”
Kaden leans back until their shoulders touch.
“Something like that. Mostly for the view.”
Clover misses a note.
Then she leans into him.
Kaden stays.
Life Beyond the Fire
Kaden and Clover eventually fall deeply in love.
The Blaze warrior from Dragon’s Maw and the gentle Terran healer who first knelt beside him after a lost fight build a life together near Wavecrest.
And eventually they have a daughter.
A little Blaze girl.
She grows up knowing a father whose scars no longer define everything he sees when he looks at the world, and a mother whose kindness survived every battlefield she crossed.
Clover’s lute remains with the family.
It once belonged to her mother.
Clover carried it through the Crimson Sleep.
Kaden listened to it beneath an Emberfall sunset while realizing that loving people also meant learning the stories they carried.
Years later, their daughter begins learning to play that same lute.
The notes are clumsy at first.
Kaden listens anyway.
The boy from Dragon’s Maw once looked toward another warrior’s victory and decided that fate had chosen its favorite.
Then life gave him Aurora.
Dustin.
Leon.
Clover.
A daughter.
A home near Wavecrest.
And Kaden kept the promise he made to his sister.
He became better.
The fire that fought so hard to wake finally gets to burn somewhere warm.
